Abstract

A carton blank comprises face panels (2a and 2) connected to and spaced apart by one or more side panels (1b), one of the face panels (2) being located adjacent two further side panels (1,1a). The face and side panels (2a, 2,1b, 1,1a) are defined by free edges and/or score or fold lines. Connection means (3, 3a, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11) enable the blank to be folded into a carton with the face panels (2a, 2) opposite each other and the side panels (1b, 1,1a) forming a perimeter. An aperture (7) covered by transparent film may be provided. <IMAGE>

Description

TITLE Carton Blank and Container This invention is concerned with a carton blank and a container formed from such a blank. The technical field of this invention is primarily the field of carton blanks for disposable use, suitable for containing perishable goods such as foodstuffs. The invention is more particularly concerned with a blank for forming a sandwich carton, and such a carton formed from the blank by means of folding and/or adhering appropriate parts.
Triangular type sandwich cartons are known for storing one or more cut sandwiches, and displaying the contents through a translucent or transparent window formed in the blank. It is an object of the present invention to provide a convenient to use blank which can be partially assembled in a substantially flat condition.
According to this invention there is provided a blank for forming a carton comprising a first face panel and a second face panel, both said panels connected to and spaced apart by one or more side panels, one of said face panels located adjacent two further side panels, the face and side panels being defined by free edges and/or score or fold lines, and including connection means enabling the blank to be folded into a carton with the face panels opposite each other and the side panels forming a perimeter.Preferably the connection means include flaps.
Preferably the blank can be initially formed in a planar condition. The carton to be formed may be triangular and is conveniently made of suitable material and dimension for forming a triangular sandwich pack.
The blank may include an aperture, e.g. a circular aperture, which extends in the face and side panels.
The aperture can be covered with a translucent or transparent film attached to the said face and side panels.
It is preferred that the face panels are of generally triangular configuration. One of the side panels may be discontinuous in the sense that an aperture is present which splits that side panel into two segments.
One of said further side panels can include three flaps which extend from score or fold lines, the other of said further side panels may have two flaps which extend from score or fold lines.
The blank may conveniently include two score or fold lines which mutually intersect at a location between a flap and a score or fold line, enabling a flap to be fastened to a side panel adjacent thereto to form a partially constructed carton.
In such a blank with intersecting fold lines, a partially constructed carton may be formed and presented or stored in a substantially flat condition without disturbing any fastening of that flap to that side panel adjacent thereto.
The connection means may comprise a tuck and flap arrangement, adhesive preferably being absent save in respect of any fastening between a flap and a side panel in the general region of said intersecting fold lines.
In order that the invention may be illustrated and readily carried into effect, an embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which; Figure 1 is a plan view of a planar blank, Figure 2 is a view of a partially constructed blank, in process of folding into the arrangement shown by Figure 3, and Figure 3 shows the arrangement of blank prior to completion into fully folded and connected form.
Referring firstly to Figure 1, there is provided a blank suitable for forming a triangular carton (not shown) the blank having a first face panel 2a and a second face panel 2, both of which are connected to and spaced apart by a side panel 1b which is shown separated into two segments. One of the face panels 2 is located immediately adjacent two further side panels 1, 1a these panels being defined by free edges and/or score or fold lines. The blank includes an arrangement of flaps 3,3a,5,6 and connection means 9,10,11 enabling the blank to be folded into a carton with the face panels opposite each other and the side panels forming a perimeter.
The aperture 7 is bounded by part of the face panels 2,2a and parts of the side panel ib. It is covered on one side of the blank by means of a transparent sheet of plastics film 8. For the sake of convenience, the said sheet of plastics film is not illustrated in the subsequent drawings. One surface of the flap 3a can be adhered to a part of the side panel la in the triangular region between dotted lines 4 and 4a. The said side panel la can be folded about both fold lines 4 and 4a, when said flap 3a is adhesively bonded thereto.
From the planar condition shown in Figure 1, the blank can be assembled into a partially completed container by adhering the flap 3a to the triangular section of panel la between intersecting fold lines, then folding panels 1 and la about fold lines 4 closest the aperture 7, and about the fold line 4a such that the flap 3a is located within an internal region of the blank.
From this partially assembled condition the blank can be folded back into the arrangement shown by Figure 2. Here, the side panel la has been folded to extend normally with respect to the panel 2, as has the adjacent side panel 1. The flaps 3 have been folded to substantially follow the' fold lines 4 which form the longest fold line of the said panel 2. Face panel 2a has similarly been folded approximately 900 about its fold line 4, whereupon the blank can be further folded into the position shown by Figure 3.
In Figure 3 the flaps 5 and 6 have been folded through 900 to extend normally from their respective side panels 1, la and also in parallel with the face panel 2.
The third side panel ib has also been folded about its fold line 4 (forming the longest fold line in the panel 2) such that all three side panels 1, la and ib are substantially upright extending normally from the face panel 2. In order to fully assemble the package it only remains to fold that panel 2a about its own fold line 4 and insert the projecting flap 9, additionally split at 10, into a receiving tuck 11 cut into the flap 5.
When that connection has been made there is provided a carton having two opposite and substantially parallel face panels 2, 2a and three substantially upright side panels 1,la and ib which form a perimeter to the carton.
Such a carton when formed is particularly suitable for storing cut sandwiches, the contents thereof being visible through the aperture 7 and any transparent film provided thereover.
It is possible to minimise the use of adhesive by adhering only the one flap 3a to an adjacent side panel la. The folding and final assembly of the blank into a carton can be rapidly performed without skilled labour. The initial blank can be cut from one piece of flat cardboard, stiff paper or similar suitable material.
The invention includes within its scope a carton formed from a blank as described above with or without any product contained in the formed carton.
