Abstract

A book covering sheet 1 comprises a roll of transparent plastics material 2 having a strip of adhesive adjacent each longitudinal side edge covered by a peel-off strip 4. To form the covering material into a wallet the material is cut to a pre-set length and cut and folded about top, bottom and side fold lines 16 and a central fold line 17. The flaps thus formed are folded over and bonded together by removing the peel off strip 4 from the adhesive to form a wallet. The adhesive may extend transversely across the sheet. A number of spaced-apart longitudinally and/or transversely extending adhesive strips may be provided. <IMAGE>

Description

BOOK WRAPPING PAPER The present invention relates to book covering.
One of the major problems in the ufle of books is to ensure that the outer cover is not damaged either due to normal wear and tear or by, for example, somebody spilling something on the cover. Thus, many people cover their book. with wrapping paper, transparent cellophane and other plastics materials.
Such an operation is, however, time consuming and requires a reasonable modicum of skill so that many people are unable to do it successfully.
The present invention is directed towards overcoming these problems.
According to the invention there is provided a book cover for covering booke and the like comprising an elongated roll of covering material having a strip of adhesive adjacent each longitudinal marginal edge thereof.
In one embodiment of the invention the adhesive extends substantially the length of the roll.
Preferably the cover includes a plurality of longitudinally spaced-apart transverse adhesive strips extending at least partially between the longitudinal edges of the covering material In one aspect the invention provides a book cover comprising a sheet of covering material having an adhesive strip adjacent each side and/or longitudinal edge of the maters Preferably a plurality of longitudinally and/or transversely spaced-apart adhesive strips are provided on the covering material.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention the adhesive is covered by a peel-off strip. Preferably the peeloff strip extends substantially the length and width of the adhesive strip. Typically the strip is divided into a number of longitudinally and/or transversely spaced-apart peel-off strip sections.
The adhesive strip may be divided into a number of longitudinally and/or transversely spaced-apart adhesive strip section.
Preferably the covering material is transparent.
Preferably the covering material is a plastics material. Further, the invention provides a book covering wallet comprsslngs- an outer cover; a pair of opposed side pocket; and two opposed sets of pairs of top pockets and bottom pockets, one side pocket and one opposed top and bottom pockets receives one book end cover.
Further, the invention provides a method of forming a book covering wallet comprising the steps of:- cutting a sheet of the material to a pre-set length to define, top, bottom and side edges; defining a central fold line parallel to and intermediate the side edges; cutting the sheet along portion of the fold line from the top and bottom side edges; cutting out a portion of the sheet adjacent each corner; folding the sheet along a fold line parallel to and adjacent each side edge; folding the sheet along fold lines parallel to the top and bottom side edges; and exposing sufficient of the adhesive to form the wallet.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description of an embodiment thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a book covering sheet according to the invention, Fig. 2 is a croes-sectional view in the direction of arrows Xt-II of Fig. 1, rig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view of portion of the sheet, rig. 4 is a perspective view of the sheet in use, Fig. 5 is a plan view of the cut sheet showing the cutting and folding lines, Fig. 6 is a view of the sheet with the cut-out operation performed, Pigs. 7 to 9 are perspective view. from above of the book covering or wallet for and in use.
Referring to the drawings there is provided a book covering sheet indicated generally by the reference numeral 1 formed from an elongated roll of binding material 2 such as a transparent plasties material, adjacent each longitudinal edge of which is placed a strip of adhesive 3 covered by a peel-off strip 4. The strip 4 may be in short sections to facilitate the exposure of as much adhesive as is required.
To provide the book cover in the form of a wallet the binding material 2 is cut into a sheet as illustrated in rigs. 4 and 5 and identified by the reference numeral 10 which defines top, bottom and side edges 11, 12 and 13 respectively. All fold lines are illustrated by interrupted lines and cuts by full lines in the drawings. In turn, top, bottom and aide fold lines 14, 15 and 16 respectively are marked out or otherwise formed. A central fold line 17 is formed. Cut-outs 18 are made along the central fold line 17 as are corner ,cut- outs shown by the full lines 19 at each corner. The cut-out sheet 10 is shown in Fig. 6 where there is now defined central portions 20 and 21, aide flap. 22 and 23, top flaps 24 and 25 and bottom flaps 26 and 27.The two side flaps 22 and 23 respectively are folded over about the fold lines 16 as illustrated in rigs. 7 to 9 in which a covered book Is indicated by the reference numeral 30. Portion of the backing strip 4 is removed and the top flap 24 is folded about the fold line 14 over the side flap 22. The other top flap and bottom flaps are folded over about the respective fold lines to form a wallet. Depending on how much of the adhesive has been exposed the wallet can be firmly secured to the book cover or alternatively it can be easily removed.
It will be appreciated that the sheet may be formed from any suitable material including paper.
It will also be appreciated that in some cabs the adhesive may extend at least partially traneveriely across the sheet.
A number of spaced-apart longitudinally and/or transversely extending adhesive strips may be provided.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment hereinbefore described but may be varied in constructional detail.
