Abstract

A downlink (103) between a communications dispatch console (102) and digitally trunked radio repeater system site controller (410) efficiently transfers message data between the site controller (410) and the console (102) over a standard 9.2 kilobit per second landline (452). A downlink trunking card (450) identical in structure to trunking cards (400-402-408) used in the preferred embodiment system for RF channel signal processing interfaces the site controller (410) with the landline link (450-454-457). A similar trunking card (454) on the other side of the landline link (452) interfaces the dispatch console (102) with the landline link (452). Message protocol and format is translated between the site controller (410) and the landline link (452) and between the landline link (452) and the dispatch console (102). Data buffering at each end of the landline link (452) maximizes data transfer rate over the landline (452), and in addition, a priority scheme insures that more important messages are transmitted over the downlink (103) before less important messages. Retransmit-until-acknowledged protocol is used to insure reliable message transfer - and also to permit receiving units (300, 302, 304, 306) from the downlink (103) to slow down transmitting units (300, 302, 304, 306) in order to avoid message traffic blockage.
