Abstract

An RDS push-button radio receiver comprises a PI code store for storing user-selectable PI codes associated with the push buttons. The receiver additionally comprises a listening conditions code store storing sets of user-selectable listening conditions associated with PI codes. This second store is addressable by the PI code of a broadcast to which the receiver is tuned. Thus, for example, the volume of a particular programme can be preset.

Description

IMPROVEMENT TO RDS RADIO RECEIVERS The Radio Data System RDS was developed under the auspices of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) who publish its specification "Specification of the radio data system RDS for VHF/FM sound broadcasting" EBU Document 3244-E, 1984. The main objective of this system is to facilitate the realisation of automatic tuning features in new receivers by using the Programme Identification (PI) code, Alternative Frequency (AF) codes, and, where appropriate, Other Network (ON) features of RDS. The various codes are carried by a digital data channel accompanying the broadcast programme.
RDS broadcasts a set of information about each programme service and links all this information with the programme identification code (PI code). Thus a set of alternative frequencies, traffic programme status, and decoder identification are broadcast and can be stored in the receiver using the PT code as an address.
The object of the present invention is to enable this concept of using the RDS PI code as an address to be extended to store and retrieve other information relevant to the listening conditions which the listener prefers for each programme service.
RDS provides a simple means whereby the listener can gain access to the widrange of programme services provided by the broadcaster without needing to be concerned with frequencies or wavelengths. However, having used RDS to tune to a programme service the listener may still wish to manually select his own listening conditions for that service. These listening conditions include: 1. Volume Control Setting 2. Setting of tone (treble & bass) filter and "loudness" (i.e. audio spectrum contour) controls.
3. Setting of stereo defeat status (i.e. manual selection of mono on a stereo broadcast e.g. in order to overcome noise or distortion).
4. Establishment of linked lists of other programme services (e.g. on MF or LF) which may be used as a generic alternative is the desired programme service is not available.
The present invention proposes that data relating to all these manual settings be stored using the PI code as an address so that whenever a programme service with that PI code is selected, by whetever means, the stored preferred listening conditions for that service are also recalled and used. This system has advantages over other known systems which associate such data with particular pushbuttons in that it can be applied even if the programme service is selected by manual tuning, by automatic scan-tuning or as the result of RDS assisted tuning. For example, a listener tuned to BBC Radio 2 on 89.1 HHz may prefer a different set of listening conditions when that same frequency is used to broadcast BBC Radio 1. The change in PI code could be used to switch-in the appropriate listening conditions.

Claims (1)

  1. CLAIM:
An RDS push-button radio receiver comprising a PI code store for storing user-selectable PI codes associated with the push buttons and a listening conditions code store storing sets of user-selectable listening conditions associated with PI codes and addressable by the PI code of a broadcast to which the receiver is tuned.
