Abstract

A cooking dish has a wall portion 4 and a base portion 7, the wall portion 4 and the base portion 7 being releasably engageable. The wall portion 4 is formed of a material having a lower thermal conductivity than the material of the base portion 7. In particular, the wall portion 4 is formed of a ceramics material and the base portion 7 is formed of metal. <IMAGE>

Description

Description of Invention "Improvements in or relating to a cooking dish" THIS INVENTION relates to a cooking dish and, more particularly, but not exclusively, to a cooking dish intended for use in cooking pastry dishes.
Ceramic dishes are known for cooking foodstuffs such as pastry.
However, when pastry is cooked in a ceramic dish, the pastry in contact with the base of the dish is cooked by heat transferred through the base of the dish whereas pastry in contact with the sides of the dish are also in contact with warm air in an oven and are thus cooked by both heat transferred through the sides of the dish and heat transferred from the surrounding air. As a result the sides of the pastry are cooked relatively faster than the base.
Metal dishes are used to reduce the cooking time of the pastry as they conduct more heat to the pastry than a ceramic dish. However, these dishes do not overcome the problem of uneven cooking of the pastry.
Metal dishes having push-out bases are also known but do not overcome the problem of uneven heat distribution to the pastry.
The present invention aims to provide a cooking dish for cooking a food product which overcomes the above-mentioned disadvantages.
According to the present invention there is provided a cooking dish comprising a wall portion and a base portion, the wall portion and the base portion being releasably engageable, the wall portion being formed of a material having a lower thermal conductivity than the material of the base portion.
In order that the present invention may be more readily understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example with reference-to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE I shows a perspective view of a cooking dish according to the present invention in a first disengaged position, and FIGURE 2 shows the cooking dish of FIGURE I in a second, engaged positlon.
Referring now to FIGURE I, a cooking dish according to the presentinvention comprises an annular flange I having an external circumference 2 and an internal circumference 3. The flange I has an integral wall portion 4 provided around the outer circumference 2. The wall 4 has a scalloped configuration 5.
The flange I and wall 4 are integrally formed of a ceramics material.
A circular metal base portion 7 being of substantially the same size as the outer circumference 2 of the flange I is adapted to be releasably engageable with the flange I within the wall 4 as shown in Figure 2.
In use of the cooking dish, the metal base 7 is placed over the annular flange I within the wall 4. The foodstuff such as pastry to be cooked is then placed within the dish. During cooking of the pastry, the heat is unevenly distributed to the pastry, more heat being directed through the metal base 7 which has a high conductivity and less heat is directed through the wall 4, which has a substantially lower conductivity than the metal base in order that the base of the pastry is fully cooked when the pastry around the wall 4 of the dish is cooked.
Once cooked, the pastry may be left in the dish for presentation until such time as the pastry is to be eaten and then simply served from the dish.
Alternatively, one could remove the pastry from the dish, by raising the the metal base 7 from the flange I by pushing a hand through the innercircumference 3 of the annular flange I and then pushing the underside of the metal base 7 out of engagement with the annular flange
