Abstract

A circuit screening arrangement for a printed circuit board (10) which is slotted (11) to define the area (12) to be screened. A metal screening can has a wall portion (15) with lugs (16) which fit the slots. Clearance gaps (17,18) allow printed circuit tracks (13) to cross the bridging portions (14) between the slots. The screening is completed by a lid portion (19) and a base portion (21). <IMAGE>

Description

CIRCUIT SCREENING ARRANGEMENT.
This invention relates to a circuit screening arrangement for electronic components, such as are used in high frequency and high speed digital signal applications.
It is frequently required that a group of electronic components or an electronic sub-assembly mounted on a printed circuit board be electromagnetically screened with respect to the rest of the circuitry on the printed circuit board. Whilst it is possible to contain all the required components in a metal can which is itself mounted on the board there is then the problem of making connections between the screened components and the conductive tracks on the printed circuit board. In addition it is often necessary to provide a separate small printed circuit board within the metal can.
According to the present invention there is provided a circuit screening for electronic circuit components comprising a printed circuit board (pcb) having a series of slots formed therein to define an area of the pcb, the pcb carrying at least one conductive track pattern with some tracks at least extending from the defined area via portions of the board between adjacent slots, and a screening can having a first wall portion shaped to enclose an area corresponding to the defined pcb area with parts of the wall portion formed with lugs adapted to pass through the slots in the pcb, a second lid portion shaped to correspond to the defined pcb area and adapted to close the volume bounded by the wall portion and one face of the pcb, and a third base portion shaped to correspond to the defined pcb area and adapted to co-operate with the wall portion lugs where the lugs protrude on the other face of the pcb to complete the screening arrangement.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which is an exploded view of a circuit screening arrangement.
In the drawing a printed circuit board (pcb) 10 is provided with a series of slots 11 formed to define an area 12 of the pcb. The pcb carries on at least one face a plurality of conductive tracks 13 some of which extend from the defined area 12 via portions 14 of the board between adjacent slots 11 to the area of the board outside the defined area. A metal screening can has a first wall portion 15 shaped to conform to the shape of the defined area 12. The wall portion has lugs 16 which will pass through the corresponding slots 11 when the wall portion is plasced on the pcb. The gaps 17 between the lugs are provided with clearance cut-outs 18 so that the metal wall does not touch the conductive tracks extending from the defined area 12. A lid portion 19 is also shaped to conform to the defined area 12 and is provided with a lip 20 which engages the edge of the wall portion remote from the pcb. A second base portion 21 is likewised shaped to conform to the defined area and is provided with a lip 22 which engages the protruding lugs 16 on the other side of the pcb. Th lid and base portions are secured by pillars 23, which pass through holes 24 in the pcb, and screws 25 which engage the ends of the pillars through holes 26 in the lid and base portions.
The invention provides a simple, cheap screening arrangement which allows direct printed circuit access to the screened area without the need for interconnecting terminals and wiring required for a separate screened pcb.
