Description

DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION Improvements in or relating to a greeting card THE PRESENT INVENTION relates to a greeting card.
According to this invention there is provided a blank for forming a card intended to display part of an item of clothing attached to the card, said blank comprising a first portion, means on that first portion to retain part of the item of clothing, a second adjacent portion defining an aperture, the first portion being connected to the second portion by means of a fold or crease line such that the first portion may be folded to lie adjacent the second portion with part of the item of clothing being visible through said aperture.
Preferably the blank comprises at least one further portion connected to the portion having the aperture by means of a third fold line, that further portion being foldable inwardly in order to conseal the item of clothing from the exterior of the assembly, except through the said aperture in the second portion.
Conveniently the third portion carries a fourth portion which is connected thereto by means of a hinge or fold line, the fourth portion defining an aperture therein so that the fourth portion may be folded to lie adjacent the third portion, with a further item trapped therebetween, with part of the further item being exposed through said aperture.
Advantageously the fourth portion is provided with a pair of slits adapted to retain a card bearing a message.
Conveniently the means on the first portion for retaining the item of clothing comprise two spaced apart parallel slits.
Preferably the second portion of the blank carries, on its exterior, a picture of a person wearing an item of clothing, the region of the picture depicting the item of clothing being cut away to form said aperture so that a person viewing the picture can see an item of clothing retained within the card through the aperture.
The blank may be in combination with an item of clothing in the form of a tie.
Preferably the second portion of the blank is provided with a picture depicting a man wearing a tie.
Conveniently the blank is further associated with another item of clothing in the form of a pocket hankerchief retained between the fourth portion of the blank and the third portion of the blank.
The invention also relates to a combined gift and greeting card, said combined gift and greeting card comprising a blank as described above a tie being mounted on the first portion of the blank, the first portion of the blank being folded to lie against the second portion of the blank so that the part of the tie is visible from the exterior of the card through the aperture formed in the second portion of the blank, that second portion of the blank carrying, on its exterior surface, a picture of a gentleman wearing a tie.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, and so that further features thereof may be appreciated, the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 is a view of a blank used for forming a greeting card in accordance with the invention, FIGURE 2 is a front view of the greeting card, and FIGURE 3 is an inside view of the greeting card.
Referring initially to Figure 1 the blank 1 for forming a greeting card in accordance with the invention is in the form of an elongate blank formed of cardboard or the like. The blank consists of four similarly.di- mensioned rectangular panels 2, 3, 4, 5 which are interconnected by means of fold lines 6, 7 and 8.
The left-hand end panel 2 is provided with a central cut out or notch 9 formed at its upper edge and, at a lower point, is formed with two vertically spaced apart horizontal slits 10, 11.
The next adjacent panel 3 is provided with an irregularly shaped aperture 12 therein, the purpose of which will become apparent hereinafter.
The next adjacent panel 4 is an unbroken uniform panel, whereas the right hand panel 5 is formed towards its upper edge with a relatively large rectangular aperture 12 underneath which are a pair of inclined offset angularly disposed slits 13, 14.
The blank as described above is formed into a card by applying adhesive to areas above and below the aperture 12 in the panel 5, illustrated in phantom as the areas 15, 16 on the panel 5. The panel 5 is then folded over to rest on top of panel 4, by folding the blank about the fold line 8. The adhesive thus sticks the areas 15 and 16 of the panel 5 to the panel 4, effectively defining a pocket located behind the aperture 12.
A pocket hankerchief or the like may be inserted into the aperture 12. A tie may be mounted in position on the panel 2. The short end of the tie may be tucked in through the slot 10 and out through the slot 11, so that the tie is retained in position, and the main part of the tie may pass upwards from the slots 10 and 11, across the cut-out or notch 9 and down the rear face of the panel 2, as illustrated in Figure 1. The panel 2 may then be folded about the fold-line to lie adjacent the panel 3. The blank may then be folded along the fold line 7 and will have the condition illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. The blank then has the form of a greeting card, with the tie concealed, except for the part visible through the aperture 2.
Figure 2 illustrates the front of the card, that is to say the rear face of the panel 3 as illustrated in Figure 1. On that face is printed a picture of a gentleman wearing a tie. However, the area of the picture where the tie is intended to present is constituted by the aperture 12 which has been mentioned above.
It will be understood that since the region of the tie which passes from the slots 10 and 11 up to the cut out or notch 9 is now pressed against the aperture 12, the tie can be seen through the aperture 12. Thus a person looking at the card will see the picture of the gentleman wearing the tie, and will then realise that the tie visible in the picture is actually a tie contained within the card. When the card is opened, to have the condition illustrated in Figure 3, the tie 17 can be clearly seen, since the tie is located within the central part of the card. A pocket hankerchief 18 present in the pocket behind the aperture 12 may be visible through the aperture 12, and is retained in position within the card by virtue of the presence of the adhesive areas 15, 16.
A small rectangular card 19 carrying a message may have the corners tucked in through the slits 13, 14.
It is envisaged that a plurality of these cards 19 may be supplied, carrying a number of messages such as "Happy Birthday", "with love", "congratulations", "Happy Christmas", "best wishes", "Happy Anniversary", "thank you" and any other message deemed appropriate.
It is to be appreciated that a person buying the card will also buy the tie and hankerchief, and thus the card forms a composite card and present.
Whilst the invention has been described with reference to one embodiment it is to be appreciated that many modifications may be effected without departing from the scope of the invention.
