Abstract

Photographs and other documents are protected by a security film having a heat stable outer layer such as polyester and an inner sealing layer of a heat plastic material for sealing the outer layer to the photograph. The sealing layer has a contact surface which adheres to the photograph when heated and allowed to cool in contact therewith and carries an authenticating design. The sealing layer material is selected from copolymers of polyethylene for example to have low cohesive properties and high adhesive properties when melted so that the design carrying contact surface cannot be removed by heating. The security film is particularly useful for preventing fraudulent alteration of passport photographs and may be used with authenticating designs including non visible inks detectable by infra red or ultra-violet light.

Description

SPECIFICATION A security film for a document This invention relates two security films for documents and in particular but not exclusively to securityfilmsfor identity photographs, passports, security passes and the like.
Security films are known for such uses in which an outer layer of a polyester based material is coated with a sealing layer of polyethylene or a copolymer thereof. The outer layer is then sealed to the document surface using a suitable machine in which the sealing layer is melted with a contact surface of the sealing layer in contact with the document surface. On cooling the sealing layer solidifies and anyattemptto remove the security film at normal temperatures results in destruction of the document.
It is also known to print a security image onto the contact surface prior to sealing so asto overlaythe document after sealing, the design of the security image being such asto make counterfeiting ofthe sealed document a difficult operation and thereby providing a means of checking the authenticity ofthe document.
It has hitherto been a problem with such security films that their removal has been possible by applying heat to melt the sealing layer and peeling back both the outer layer and sealing layer with the design largely intact so that the sealing layer could then be reapplied after amending the document or transferred to another document.
According to the present invention a security film for a document comprises an outer layer of relatively heat stable plastics material and a sealing layer of a relatively heat plastic sealing material for sealing the outer layer to the document, the sealing layer having a contact surface which in use adheres to the document when heated and allowed to cool in contact therewith and which carries an authenticating design, wherein the sealing material is such that when heated to at least its melting temperature the material has relatively low cohesive properties and relatively high adhesive properties so that partofthe sealing layer including the design carrying contact surface remains in adherence with the document when the outer layer is removed by melting the sealing layer.
Preferably the sealing material is selected from copolymers of polyethylene having the above mentioned properties and in preferred embodiments ofthe invention the material may be ethylene ethyl acrylate or ethylene vinyl acetate.
Alternatively the sealing material may be a mixture of polyethylenes and copolymers of polyethylene.
Alternatively the sealing material may be acrylic.
Conveniently the design is applied in ink to the contact surface by a printing process such as an offset, flexographic or gravu re process.
Advantageously the ink is detactable only when irradiated with non visible radiation such as infra-red or ultraviolet light.
Conveniently the design may be a line print and may be a halftone simulation of a continuous tone image.
The design may advantageously be applied in two layers by gravure, one.layer forming a visible print and the other forming a halftone image detectable onlywhen irridated with non visible light.
Preferably the ink has relatively strong adhesive properties when heated. According to further aspect ofthe invention there is disciosed a method of protecting a document surface againstfraudulent alteration whereby a security film as hereinbefore described in accordance with the present invention is applied to the surface and sealed thereto by heating.
Such a method may advantageously be used where the document is a photograph.
A particular embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings of which Fig. lisa sectional view of a security film applied to a document such as a photograph for example, Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a security film as known in the prior art and being removed from a document after heating, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a securityfilm according to the present invention and being removed from a document after heating.
Referring to Fig. 1, a document 1 which is a photograph is covered by an outer layer 2 of a polyester material which is a relatively heat stable plastics material. A sealing layer 3 lies between the outer layer 2 and the document 1 and is comprised of a relatively heat plastic sealing material which adheres to the documentwhen heated and allowed to cool in contact therewith.
An authenticating design is printed on the sealing layer3 and forms an ink layer 4 comprised ofthin lines which togetherform a composite security image overlying the document 1.
Fig. 2 shows the result of removing a securityfilm according to the known prior art by the application of heat to melt the sealing layer3 and peeling backthe outer layer 2. The sealing layer 3 separates from the document 1 leaving a part 5 ofthe ink layer in place on the sealing layerwhilstthe remainder 6 ofthe ink layer has remained on the document. It would therefore be possible to replace the security film together with the part 5 of the ink layer onto an amended document or a counterfeit document such that the authenticating design was fraudulently applied.
The document 1 of Fig. 3 is sealed with a security film 7 in accordance with the present invention and includes a sealing layer 8 of ethylene ethyl acrylate.
In the drawing the outer layer 2 is being pulled away from the document 1 after applying heatto meltthe sealing layer8 Which, because of its relatively high adhesive properties when melted, continues to adhere to both the document 1 and to the outer layer 2. The relatively low cohesive properties of the material when melted consequently result in the cleavage of the sealing layer being such as to leave the contact surface 9with the document intact. The ink layer4therefore remains intact and in contact with the document so thatthe authenticating design cannot be lifted.
Any alteration made to the document cannot therefore be carried out without overwriting the security image so that any amendment can be identified by its disruption of that image. This will therefore serve to deter forgers and, where non visible inks are used, will enable altered documents to be detected using appropriate detection equipment (such as ultra vioiet lamps for irradiating ultra violet responsive ink) in cases where the forger is unaware of the presence of the security image.
The present invention has a wide range of applications in the protection of documents but is particularly useful in the protection of documents which are photographs such as passport photographs for example.
