Abstract

216,942. Prior, W., and Riley, C. E. Dec. 4, 1922. Selenium cells. - In a cell formed by applying a layer of selenium to the surfaces of electrodes constituted by two wires wound bi-spirally on an insulating base, the location of selenium between the convolutions is prevented by the use of one insulated wire 6, Fig. 3, and one uninsulated wire 5 or of two insulated wires 6, 7, Fig. 4, wound closely side by side. The insulation is removed from the outer surfaces of the wire before applying the selenium 9. The capacity of the cell shown in Fig. 3 may be increased by the use of an insulated wire 6 of greater diameter than the uninsulated wire 5. In a modification, Fig. 6, for use with high voltages, the wires 5 and 7 are separated by an insulated or non-conducting wire 8. The wires 5, 6 or 5, 7 may be of different conducting materials. The selenium may be applied in melted form and subsequently baked, or the bared wires may be clamped into contact with a thin sheet of selenium supported on a sheet of glass or mica.
