Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to an image displaying apparatus
The present invention relates to an image displaying apparatus and more particularly relates to an apparatus for use in combination with a conventional television set for displaying images, such as images stored on photographic slides, transparencies, negatives or the like.
Many people have photographic slides or transparencies that they wish to view. At the present time, if the slides or transparencies are to be shown to a number of people, it is necessary to erect a screen, and to utilise a projector to project the images onto the screen. The erection of the screen and the setting up of the projector are time consuming.
Most people nowdays have a television set, and the present invention seeks to provide a device that can be utilised in conjunction with a conventional television set for displaying images stored on photographic slides, transparencies, negatives or the like. It is envisaged that an apparatus in accordance with the invention may readily be kept instantaneously ready for use, and thus, when it is desired to show slides, transparencies, negatives or the like, these items can be readily displayed with a minimum of inconvenience merely by actuating the device in accordance with the invention, and the associated television set.
According to this invention there is provided an apparatus for generating an electrical video signal capable of being displayed on a conventional television set, which signal is representative of an image present on a photographic slide, transparency, negative or the like, said apparatus comprising means for retaining said slide, transparency, negative or the like in a viewing position, and means for directing light through the transparency slide negative or the like onto an optical/electrical image converter and means for generating a video output signal from said image converter.
Said image converter may comprise a scanning cathode ray camera tube, such as an orthicon or vidicon.
In one embodiment the output of the image converting device is connected to a modulator, the output of the modulator being the output of the apparatus.
Preferably said means for locating said slide, transparency negative or the like in position comprises a rotary magazine and an associated handling device to handle the slide, transparency, negative or the like, and conveniently remote control means are provided for controlling said handling device.
Said means for directing light through said slide transparency or negative may comprise a lamp associated with a mirror and a lens arrangement.
This invention also relates to an apparatus as described above in combination with a television set.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, and so that further features thereof may be appreciated, the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a schematic illustration of one embodiment of the invention.
Turning to the accompanying drawing one embodiment of the invention is illustrated. A housing 1 is provided with a conventional circular magazine 2 which contains a plurality of photographic transparencies or slides 3. Each transparency 3 is located within an appropriate compartment formed within the magazine 2. The magazine is associated with a conventional transparency handling arrangement 4 (which is only illustrated schematically), which can be actuated by an appropriate remote control unit 5, illustrated as being connected to the housing 1 by means of an appropriate lead 6. Of course, the remote control unit can be operatively connected to the housing 1 by means of an infra-red arrangement if desired.
When the transparency handling mechanism is actuated a selected transparency is moved to a viewing position.
When the transparency is in the viewing position, light from a high intensity lamp 7 is directed, with the assistance of a parabolic mirror 8 and an appropriate lens assembly 9, through the transparency 3, and the image present on the transparency is thus directed into a scanning cathode ray tube camera 10. The scanning cathode ray tube camera can be of any conventional format, and can thus comprise a vidicon or an orthicon tube, together with the conventional scanning coils, and with the conventional scanning circuitry, which is not illustrated. The output signal of the camera, present on lead 11, is supplied through an output lead 12 from the housing 1 to a conventional television receiver 13.It will be appreciated that some television receivers 13 are provided with input sockets adapted to receive a video signal directly from a camera such as the camera 10, or adapted to receive a video signal directly from a video recorder.
Such an input terminal is thus connected to the circuitry of the television set between the FM tuner and demodulator, and the amplifiers present in the set. If the apparatus of the present invention is to be utilised in connection with a television set of this type, the output lead 11 from the camera 10 can be connected directly to the output lead 12 from the housing 1. However, it is the case with many television sets presently in use, that there is no such terminal connected to a point between the FM tuner and demodulator, and the associated amplifier, and in such case it is necessary to include, within the housing 1, a modulator, which is indicated in phantom as modulator 15.In such an embodiment of the invention signals from the camera 10 pass through the lead 11 to the modulator, and then a modulated signal is supplied through the lead 12 to the aerial socket of the television set 13. The television set then processes the signal in the same way as it would process a normal signal supplied to it through the aerial.
In either event the image present on the transparency is displayed on the screen of the television set.
It is to be appreciated that whilst the invention has been described with reference to one specific embodiment of the invention, many modifications may be made within the scope of the invention. For example, the scanning cathode ray television described may be replaced by a solid state device comprising a plurality of photo sensitive cells associated with a charge coupled device (CCD) arrangement to enable the image to be scanned rapidly or any other optical/image converter. Also it is to be appreciated that whilst the invention has been described with reference to the use of transparencies contained with a rotary magazine 2, the invention may equally be applied to photographic negatives which may be introduced to the housing by means of an appropriate negative handling device.Where colour negatives are utilised it is to be appreciated that a colour inverting circuit will have to be associated with the output of the camera 10, or the camera 10 will have to be appropriately designed to cope with a negative input image. A sophisticated embodiment of the invention may be capable of accepting both slides and negatives, and in such a case the camera 10 may have to be provided with an adjustable focus lens, or even a turret containing lenses of different types that may be brought into operation to enable the camera to compensate for the different sizes of the slides and the negatives. All these functions can be controlled from the remote control unit 5.
Again whilst one particular form of illuminating device has been illustrated, many modifications may be made within the scope of the invention.
Furthermore, various processing devices may be associated with, or incorporated in the apparatus, to modify the signal from the optical image convertor or at any other point in the apparatus, for example to allow the colour balance to be altered electronically under the control of an operator or automatically by an electronic image monitoring device. Likewise electronic processing means, such as a micro-computer, may be incorporated in the device, for example incorporating an erasable electronic memory whereby selected portions of an image signal derived from scanning a transparency or the like may be modified before the corresponding image is reproduced on the television screen, so that, for example, blemishes on the transparency may be 'removed', selected areas increased or reduced in visual contrast, a text or the
like superimposed on the basic image, and so on.
Such a facility will, of course, be of substantial assistance to the photographer, for example in allowing him to experiment rapidly with the effects of various processing techniques he may use to produce the optimum finished picture from a basic transparency or negative. Such a facility might also, of course, be used in other ways, for example to allow one subscriber of a cable television network to send a video greetings "card" of his own selection and composition to another subscriber.
