Abstract

Apparatus for the evaluation of a security card includes means which, when a card is presented to the apparatus, scans a physical feature, such as the thumbprint or the head, of the card presenter. Data representing the thumbprint or head is also stored on the security card and is read by an interrogation device. A comparator compares the data derived from the thumbprint or head with the data derived from the card and provides a signal indicating whether there is correspondence. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Security cards and apparatus for evaluating such cards When security cards, for example credit cards or identity cards for entering secure premises, are used, it is desirable to be able to establish that the person producing the card is the true owner of the card. It is known to record magnetically on such a card a personal identification number of a bank customer to whom the card is issued by the bank and to ask anyone presenting the card to a cash dispenser, for example, to key his memorized personal identification number into the machine; a verifying apparatus then reads the personal identification number from the card and compares it with the number which has been keyed in to determine whether the machine should dispense currency or should refuse to do so. A similar system has been proposed for use with machines for controlling the entrance to secure premises.
However, the possibility of fraud still exists.
For example, someone else may have access to the personal identification number and to cards or someone watching a card carrier keying in his number may memorize the keyed number and subsequently steal the card.
According to a first aspect of the invention, apparatus to enable the evaluation of a security card is provided with a camera which, when a card is presented to the apparatus, scans a physical feature of the person presenting the card to provide a stream of imagerepresenting data; means are provided for comparing this data with digital image-representing data stored on the card and read by the apparatus, or with such data stored in a central file and extracted in response to a signal representing the personal identification number of the card owner, read from the card presented to the apparatus.
As examples, the physical feature recorded on the card (or in the central file) and scanned by the camera may be a thumb print or the head of the card owner.
In yet another aspect of the invention, apparatus to enable the evaluation of a security card is provided with a camera which, when the card is presented to the apparatus, scans a physical feature of the person presenting the card to provide a stream of imagerepresenting data, in combination with means for displaying the image represented by the data to enable an operator to make a visual comparison of this image with a stored image of the physical feature in question.
In yet a further aspect, the invention consists in a security card on which is recorded data representing an image of a physical feature of the card owner, the recording being in a form such that the card does not present the image to the eye.
As examples, the image may be stored magnetically or in the form of pits in the surface of a card, which may be made by a laser beam, for example. In another form, the image is recorded holographically. In yet a further form the image representing data is first encoded and then recorded photographically.
In the drawing, a security card 10 may carry a recording of data representing the thumb print of the card owner, or the portrait of the card owner, or both. When the owner wishes to enter the secure premises, he inserts his card into an interrogation device 1 2.
If the card carries a representation of his thumb print, he then places his thumb on a thumb print pressure pad 14 and a camera 1 6 or similar signal-generating device generates a train of signals representing the thumb print. Such signals are applied, for example, to a comparator 1 8 which also receives the output of the interrogation device 1 2. The comparator provides a yes/no output, according to the similarity between the thumb print on the pressure pad and that derived from the data on the card.
If the card carries data representing a portrait of the card owner, the person presenting the card stands before a camera 1 6 which scans the space in which the head of the cardpresenter is located and generates a train of signals which is applied to the comparator for comparison with the train of signals derived by a sensor reading the card in the interrogation device 1 2.
As an alternative, the two sets of data, one derived from the thumb print on the pressure pad (or the camera scanning the head of the card-presenter) and the other derived from the card, may be imaged on to a CRT monitor 20 to enable an operator to make a visual comparison.
The identification of the thumbprint or other feature by comparison with the stored data may be carried out by techniques similar to those disclosed in "Guide to Pattern Recognition using random-access memories" published in "Computers and Digital Techniques", February 1979, Vol 2, No. 1 pages 29-40 or in British Patent Specification No.2112194, for example.
