Description

SPECIFICATION Improvments in or relating to a razor THIS INVENTION relates to a razor and to an oil composition or emollient for use with such a razor.
When shaving it is customary to apply shaving soap or cream to the area to be shaved, and then to use a razor with a sharp cutting edge. This has the disadvantage that any moles, warts or irregularities in the skin are covered by the soap or cream and thus may be accidentally cut. Also it is time consuming to apply the soap or cream.
According to the invention there is provided a razor comprising a handle adapted to be manually grasped, and at least one cutting edge supported thereby, said razor incorporating a reservoir for an oil composition or emolient, the arrangement being such that oil or emolient from the reservoir may be applied to the blade of the razor.
Preferably, said bottle or reservoir constitutes the handle of the razor.
In one embodiment said bottle or reservoir is associated with a duct or channel formed in the razor extending from the bottle or reservoir to the cutting edge of the razor so that said oil or emolient may be caused to flow from the bottle or reservoir to said cutting edge, and the bottle or reservoir may be formed of a flexible material, so that the bottle or reservoir may be compressed to cause said oil or emolient to flow through said duct or channel to the cutting edge of the razor.
In a preferred embodiment the bottle or reservoir forms part of the razor that may be detached from the rest of the razor so that the bottle or reservoir may then be located to apply oil or emolient from the reservoir to the cutting edge of the razor.
Advantageously, said bottle or reservoir is connected by means of a screw connection to the part of the razor that carries the cutting edge, and conveniently said bottle or reservoir has a narrow mouth to enable the oil or emolient to be applied dropwise to the cutting edge of the razor.
According to another aspect of this invention there is provided an oil composition or emolient for use when shaving, said oil composition or emolient comprising a mixture of two silicone fluids, each said silicone fluid having a viscosity within the range of 5 and 5000 centistokes, the said mixture having a viscosity of between 100 and 1 20 centistokes, including between 20 and 30 percent isopropyl Myristate, and between 0.05 to 0.5 percent Azulene, together with 0.05% to 0.5% oil extract of the plant Aloe Vera.
The composition or emolient may addition- ally contain between 0.1% and 2% of a perfume.
The invention also relates to a method of shaving.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, and so that further features thereof may be appreciated, the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a razor in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is an exploded sectional view of the components of the razor, and Figure 3 is a sectional view showing the interconnection between the head and the carriage of the razor.
The razor has a handle 1 intended to be grasped manually when the razor is utilised, the handle 1 being constituted by a bottle or reservoir. The handle is connected to a head assembly 2 of the razor.
As can be seen most clearly in Fig. 2 the head 2 defines a recess 3 that is open towards the bottle or reservoir 1. A threaded plug like insert 4 is mounted within the recess as a friction fit. The threaded part of the insert 5 is adapted to cooperate with a screw threaded portion provided on the mouth 6 of the bottle or reservoir 1. A plug 7 is provided which is inserted in the open mouth 6 of the bottle, the plug 7 defining a tapering passage.
A protruding part of the plug 7 is accommodated with a cavity present in the insert when the components are all assembled.
A carriage 8 is provided which has two upwardly directed "U" shaped lugs 9. The lugs 9 pass into recesses 10 provided on the leading edge of the razor head 2. The side edge portions of the razor head (as can be seen most clearly in Fig. 3), are provided with detents 11 which extend into the recesses 10 to engage the under-surfaces of the lugs 9, The side edge portions of the razor head thus constitute a snap fastening between the carriage and the razor head. The razor head 2 also defines two resilient blade like portions 1 2 that extend through apertures in the carriage 8 to resiliently retain the carriage at a desired angular orientation relative to the rest of the razor head 2. A blade 1 3 may be slidingly mounted on to the carriage. The blade may be an assembly incorporated twin cutting edges.
The bottle or reservoir will, when the razor is to be utilised, be filled with an oil composition that will be described hereinafter in greater detail. When a person is to shave utilising the razor, initially he (or she) will unscrew the bottle from the razor head, and will gently pour one or two drops of oil through the plug onto the razor blade. The person will then wash and rinse the area to be shaved with warm water, leaving the area wet. It is then possible to shave in the normal way provided that the skin is kept wet during the shaving process. During this procedure it may be necessary to rinse the razor in water to remove hairs, but it should not be necessary to apply any more oil to the razor blade.
In a modified embodiment of the invention, not shown in the accompanying drawings, a duct or oil passage may be defined through the razor head from the bottle to the razor blade. It is thus envisaged that by holding the razor in an appropriate orientation and by gently squeezing the sides of the reservoir (which would be made of a slightly resilient material) oil may be transferred directly through the duct from the reservoir to the blade. It is envisaged that such an embodiment may prove to be more convenient than the embodiment illustrated and described above since it will not be necessary to unscrew the reservoir from the rest of the razor at the commencement of each shaving session.
The oil composition of emolient that is preferred is a iiquid product comprising at least two silicone fluids each having a viscosity within the range of 5 to 5000 centistokes. However, the mixture of the two fluids is such that the viscosity of the final mixture is between 100 and 1 20 centistokes. The percentages of the selected silicone fluids may be selected by a man skilled in the art to obtain the desired end result dependent upon the precise viscosity of the fluids initially selected for use. The mixture also contains between 20% and 30% of Isopropyl Myristate and additionally contains between 0.05% and 0.5% of Azulene. The Azulene imparts a blue colour to the emolient so that the emolient can be clearly seen when it has been applied to the razor blade. Thus an even application of the emolient to the razor blade can be assured. The emolient additionally contains between 0.05% and 0.5% of the oily extract of the plant Aloe Vera, which has antiseptic or curative properties. Thus this constituent of the emolient tends to ensure that any cuts made during the shaving process heal rapidly.
It is also preferred that the emolient contains a suitable perfume at a concentration of between 0.01% and 2%.
The following Example shows the composition of a typical emolient in accordance with the invention.
Example 1 Silicone Fluid 20 centistoke 30% Silicone Fluid 350 centistoke 45% Isopropyl Myristate 24.4% Azulene 0.1% Aloe Vera Oil 0.1% Perfume 0.4% It is to be appreciated that when shaving with a razor as described above utilising an emolient as described above the area to be shaved is not covered with shaving soap or shaving cream, and thus all the feature of the area to be shaved can be readily seen during the shaving process. This enables the person shaving to avoid accidentally cutting scars, moles or warts, or other regions where the skin is irregular.
The described emolient had hair softening properties, thus facilitating the cutting of body hair, and also has sufficient surface tension that it can be applied to a razor blade and will remain in position. Also, the emolient is water repellant, and thus will not be rinsed off from the razor blade when hairs are rinsed from the razor.
