Abstract

A hand-held, electronic trigger instrument for an electrophonic percussion instrument comprises a tapered mainframe 6 on which are a plurality of sensing pads 1-5, 7-9, activated by tapping, thus producing authentic percussion sounds. As shown the mainframe 6 is in the shape of a guitar. Thus the percussionist can move freely around the stage as opposed to being stationary, as with conventional percussion instruments, and with a small amount of physical effort and skill can produce authentic percussion sounds. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Electronic Drum Kit The electronic drum kit comprises of a solid wooden guitar shaped neck approximately 95 cm long by 6 cm wide tapering to 4 cm. At the bottom end of the neck are two shapes, the shapes can be varied limited only by the makers imagination. The two oblong shapes represents snare and bass drum, they are placed opposite each other and can be angled to suit the players hand. The top pad is played with the thumb and the bottom pad with the remaining fingers.
The upper part of the neck has two to three more pads, depending on specification, again every shape or size. These pads, one mounted on to the neck, the playing surface can face upwards or outwards.
Each pad will contain the necessary pick-ups and resistors, the wiring for all the pads will travel through the neck to a multi plug. There are two nipples at each end of the neck so a shoulder strap can be fitted.
This idea differs from the rest of the drum kits because it is played like a guitar not like a drum kit. No sticks are needed. The drummer can walk around like a guitarist or vocalist, very little effort is needed.
This drum kit can be lined up to a drum console, i.e. Simmons, Linn Drum, D.M.X. etc. or at a later date it's own drum working.
Spec of Drawing Shape 1 =bass drum.
Shape 2=snare drum.
Shapes 3, 4, 5=tom toms.
Shape 6=body (neck).
Shapes 7, 8, 9=tom toms, can be removed, if desired.
1. A hand-held electronic trigger instrument comprising a tapered mainframe having a plurality of sensing pads located along the mainframe, actuated by pressing or tapping, which produces percussion sounds when interfaced with any electronic percussion simulator, synthesizers and other electronic musical instruments. The type of percussion sound produced by each sensing pad will depend on those pre-set by the percussionist, by means of a five way switch.
2. An instrument as claimed in Claim 1 whereby contactless switches are employed below the sensing pads on the mainframe to a single core lightweight screened cable which is used to transfer the state of these to a compact remote decoding unit. This has up to fifteen O5 v logic level outputs suitable for triggering drum machines, simulators, synthesizers and other electronic musical instruments. This cable may be up to 50 metres long without affecting system operation. A small printed circuit board containing all the switch reading electronics is installed in the mainframe, to which each of the switches is connected. A standard 1/4" jack receptical is fitted as output signal connector, allowing a standard cable to be used between instrument and decoding unit.
3. An instrument as claimed in Claim 1 whereby provision is made for optional additional percussion sounds by means of a flat-ended, crescent shaped attachment having sensor pads which operate in conjunction with and in the same manner as that described in Claim 1.
