Abstract

Dietary apparatus comprises an electronic device comprising a memory adapted to store calorific values of portions of foodstuffs, an input adapted so that a user may enter the total calorific value of foodstuffs to be ingested and also the identification of one or more feed portions, a calculator adapted to determine the calorific value of the said food portions to subtract the latter from said total value, and a display adapted to display the result of the subtraction.

Description

SPECIFICATION Dietary apparatus This invention relates to apparatus for use when dieting and in particular to apparatus for use in regulating the calorific amount of food ingested.
According to a first aspect of the present invention dietary apparatus comprises an electronic device comprising a memory adapted to store calorific values of portions of foodstuffs, an input adapted so that a user may enter the total calorific value of foodstuffs to be ingested and also the identification of one or more food portions, a calculator adapted to determine the calorific value of the said food portions and to subtract the latter from the said total value, and a display adapted to display the result of the subtraction.
The term foodstuffs is intended to refer to all edible materials including drinks and drugs.
Preferably the device is adapted to retain the result of each subtraction in the memory. Further subtraction may be performed cumulatively until the total is reached. Alternatively, the cumulative total of the calorific values of the food portions may be retained in the memory and a fresh subtraction from the total may be performed upon each entry of the names of said one or more food portions.
The identification of a food portion may comprise the name thereof or an abbreviation of codification of the name.
The apparatus may be used to facilitate loss of weight by a user by assisting the user in restricting his ingestion of food to a maximum calorific value.
The user enters into the memory the total calorific intake for a certain period, for example each day, and subsequently enters the name of each item of food eaten during the day. The total calorific value of the food eaten is calculated and the amount which may still be eaten can be read from the display. The apparatus may be adapted to display the name and calorific value of each food portion as it is entered.
Each food portion may comprise a whole item e.g. a banana, or may comprise a convenient unit of weight, e.g. one ounce (28 g) or a standard helping such as a bowl of rice pudding.
The device is preferably of a size which will fit conveniently into a user's pocket.
The device may further comprise means for emitting a signal when the total has been exceeded. The means may comprise a word shown on the display or may comprise an audible signal or illumination of a light.
In an alternative preferred embodiment of the invention the calorific values may represent the diabetic calorific values so that the apparatus may assist a diabetic person in regulating his diet.
The input may comprise an alpha/numeric keyboard or any other convenient means. The display may take the form of a liquid crystal display and may have a scrolling capability to accommodate lengthy names of foodstuffs.
The dietary apparatus may comprise a device as hereinbefore described in conjunction with a list showing the calorific values of portions of foodstuffs. The apparatus may further comprise a diary in which a number of days' records may be kept.
The invention is further described by means of the following example.
A person may wish to restrict his daily diet to an intake of 1200 calories. The latter sum is entered at the start of the day into the memory of the apparatus.
The person may subsequently eat a boiled egg for breakfast. He enters "EGGS BOILED 1=" into the apparatus. A portion of boiled eggs comprises a whole egg and has a calorific value of 90. The display shows initially the calorific value of the egg, "90" and then the total remaining that is "1110". The person may subsequently eat two ounces of french fries. He enters "FRENCH FRIES 2=". The calorific value of an ounce of french fries is 65 and the initial display is "130". The cumulative total therefore of remaining calories, that is "980" is then displayed. The process may be continued until the daily total has been reached whereupon an alarm may be activated, such as a flashing light upon the apparatus or a display, such as "NO MORE TODAY".
The apparatus is adapted to retain the cumulative total and initial total within the memory even when switched off. The balance from one day may be retained for adjustment of the subsequent day's allowance.
Abbreviated or coded symbols may be used to identify commonly encountered foods. Thus chicken chow mein may be entered as CHI CHOW MEIN. Steak may be entered as STE.
Preferred embodiments comprise a facility for displaying the calorific value of a food item prior to deduction from the daily total. This enables a user to decide whether to eat the food item after the apparatus has displayed the calorific value.
Apparatus in accordance with this invention may incorporate an integral scale or other means for weighing foodstuffs, arranged so that the calorific value of the foodstuff is directly calculated from the weight.
Alternative embodiments of the invention may additionally calculate the amounts of fat, protein, carbohydrate or salt contained in particular foodstuffs.
