Abstract

In a digital time switching arrangement, e.g. for central heating plant, including an electronic memory in which is stored a programme of operating times there is provided a display means whereby the whole programme of operating times may be displayed simultaneously. The display means may be an array of LEDs or LCDs or a CRT.

Description

SPECIFICATION Digital time switching arrangements This invention relates to digital time switching arrangements.
More particularthe invention relates to digital time switching arrangements of the kind incorporating electronic memory means in which may be stored a programme of operating times for the arrangements.
Such switching arrangements of known form are frequently associated with display means for displaying the stored switch operating times. However, such display means are only capable of displaying at any one time a single operating time so that a display of the whole stored switch operating programme, or even a part thereof, is not available.
According to the present invention there is provided a digital time switching arrangement incorporating electronic memory means in which may be stored a programme of operating times for the arrangement and associated with display means arranged to display all the operating times of the stored programme simultaneously.
Where the memory means is adapted to store a plurality of programmes of operating times the display means is preferably arranged to display simultaneously all the stored operating times relating to any selected one programme.
Preferably the display provided by the display means is in the form of an array of display elements each of which represents a different time period, each display element being arranged to be operative or not according to whether the associated switching arrangement is required by the stored programme to be operative or not during the time period represented by that element.
Normally the time periods represented by the display elements are successive discrete time periods.
In one particular embodiment of the invention the display elements are arranged in columns and rows to form a rectangular matrix array, the elements in each column respectively representing corresponding portions of a plurality of discrete time periods, each of which is represented by the elements in a different row.
The display elements are suitably light sources such as light emitting diodes, or portions of the screen of a cathode ray tube. Alternatively the display elements may be liquid crystal display devices.
Preferably, during each operative period of the switching arrangement the or each corresponding display element is arranged to alternate between its operative and non operative conditions to indicate the operational part of the displayed programme.
One digital time switching arrangement in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows the display provided by a display means associated with the arrangement.
The arrangement is intended for controlling the operation of a central heating plant and incorporates an electronic memory means adapted to store the times at which the plant is required to be switched on and off over a seven day period, the switching arrangement controlling the plant accordingly.
The arrangement includes a display means comprising a close-packed rectangular matrix array of 168 light sources, such as light emitting diodes, arranged in seven rows of twenty-four sources each.
The twenty-four sources in each row represent, from left to right, successive one hour periods through a twenty-four hour period, the sources in successive rows, from top to bottom, representing successive twenty-four hour day periods through a week. Appropriate hour and day legends are provided along the top and left side of the display respectively, as shown in the drawing.
When the display means is activated the light sources representing the hour periods during which the switching arrangement is required by the stored programme to have turned the central heating plant on are illuminated, the other sources being turned off. The whole seven-day stored programme is thus displayed by the display means. In the drawing the illuminated sources only are shown, adjacent illuminated sources being illustrated as a continuous shaded area. Thus it can be seen, for example, that the stored programme requires the plant on Mondays to be switched on at 0700 hours, off at 1300 hours, on again at 1900 hours and off again at 2200 hours.
To indicate the actual operational part of the stored programme, when the plant is on the light sources representing the corresponding period on the display are flashed on and off.
Where the switching arrangement memory stores a plurality of programmes, a switching means may be provided to enable the display means to display any selected one of the stored programmes. Such an arrangement finds application in central heating plant controllers adapted to control the supply of heatto different zones of a building according to different programmes. In such an arrangement the display means preferably provides a further display to indicate the particular zone to which the displayed programme relates, as illustrated in the drawing.
It will be appreciated that whilst in the arrangement described above by way of example the display means comprises a matrix of display elements in the form of light emitting diodes, the display elements may comprise other devices in other arrangements in accordance with the invention. Thus, the elements may comprise liquid crystal devices. Alternatively the display means may comprise a cathode ray tube and the display elements comprise portions of the screen of the cathode ray tube.
