Eccentric-actuated pumps; rods and rod guides; stroke, varying ; singleacting piston pumps ; materials, special ; priming ; strainers; valves, arrangement of; valves, facilitating removal of.-In a pump of the kind described in Specification 118,081, the plunger 5 is driven by an eccentric 12, the driving shaft 11, eccentric, and eccentric strap being made of material which may be lubricated by the liquid pumped. In one form for pumping petrol the shaft is of hardened steel revolving in cast-iron bushes, and the eccentric and eccentric strap are of cast iron. The delivery valve comprises a ported ball-and-socket member 28 of hardened steel arranged in a ported cage 30 of cast iron, on the upper face of which the valve 34 in the form of a leather washer set in a metal washer 35 is pressed by a steel ball 36 and spring 37. A cap 33 screwing on to the member 30 holds the parts together in a housing 38 closed by a ring 40. By removing the ring, the cap 33 carrying all the valve parts may be removed. Fuel enters the pump chamber 2 through a pipe 44, strainer 46 and port 3. At starting, the delivery pipe is primed with fuel admitted from a pipe 49 through a revoluble member 50 having a longitudinal groove 51 which may be brought into register with a port 47 communicating with the delivery chamber of the valve. The driving shaft 11 and the member 51 are packed by means of a shoulder pressed onto a packing washer 54 by a spring 53.
