Abstract

The invention relates to a device for diagnosing the condition of a foetus in utero which comprises means for applying a sound stimulus for the foetus and means for detecting foetal movement resulting from the stimulus. The device may comprise a belt to go around the abdomen of a pregnant women, the belt comprising a strain gauge which detects elongation of the belt, and a sonic emitter. The device may also comprise a foetal heart detector for detecting the sounds produced by the foetal heart. The sound stimulus preferably resembles or is identical to the sounds which the foetus hears naturally in utero.

Description

SPECIFICATION Device for diagnosing the condition of a foetus in utero This invention relates to a device for diagnosing the condition of a foetus in utero.
According to the invention there is provided a device for diagnosing the condition of a foetus in utero which comprises means for applying a sound stimulus to the foetus and means for detecting foetal movement resulting from the stimulus.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described. This comprises a belt which, in use, around the abdomen of a pregnant woman whose foetus it is desired to examine. The belt is provided with a strain gauge which detects elongation of the belt. Mounted on the belt is a sonic emitter arranged to transmit into the woman's abdomen a sound signal which resembles or is identical to the sound which the foetus hears naturally in utero.
The sound may in the first place be recorded and the recorder replayed through the sonic emitter.
Alternatively, the sound may be synthesised by appropriate means. The belt preferably also carries a foetal heart detector for detecting the sounds produced by the foetal heart.
The outputs from the strain gauge and the foetal heart detector are fed to a graphic recorder on which the outputs are plotted. Also, a signal is fed from the sonic emitter to the recorder to produce a trace indicating the output of the sonic emitter. In addition, the recorder receives an intermittent signal produced by the pregnant woman herself operating an appropriate control, for example a button. This intermittent button produces yet another trace on the recorder.
The operation of the device is as follows. Firstly, the woman is examined to determine the position of the head and heart of the foetus. Then the belt is secured around her abdomen in a position such that the sonic emitter is over the head of the foetus and the heart detector is over the heart of the foetus. Sonic stimuli are then provided by the sonic emitter. If the foetus is healthy these stimuli will induce limb movement, which may be kicking of the legs or moving of the arms. Such movement is felt by the woman who is instructed to actuate the control, for example a button, whenever she feels such movement. The trace produced by the control thus indicates the instants when the woman detects foetal movement. The foetal movement also produces movement of the abdomen which in turn causes strain on the belt secured round the abdomen. The strain is detected by the strain gauge and a signal therefrom passes to the recorder. During this process the heart detector is producing a record of the activity of the foetal heart.
The device is capable of detecting various defects in the condition of the foetus. For example, complete lack of limb movement in response to the stimuli is likely to indicate failure at some point in the motor control of the foetus. Delayed response to stimuli may indicate hypoxia, a condition involving a reduced oxygen supply to the foetus which will cause brain damage if not diagnosed sufficiently early.
The power requirements of the device are small and so it can be battery-operated, making it possible for the whole device, including the recorder, to be in portable form.
