Abstract

The apparatus comprises a baseboard 1, a plurality of upstanding posts 2 and a plurality of playing beads 3 which are locatable upon the posts. These beads are identified by different colours and the game is played by successively placing beads onto posts to achieve a maximum number of lines of the same colour. Each bead, once played, is not subsequently moved during the game. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Game apparatus This invention relates to an apparatus for playing a game.
It is an object of the invention to provide a game for amusement, enjoyment and in certain respects to develop skills.
According to this invention there is provided an apparatus for playing a game comprising a baseboard fitted with a plurality of upstanding posts arranged in lateral and longitudinal rows with respect to said baseboard, and a number of playing units each of which is marked with a characterising feature and locatable upon any post where it remains in position until completion of the game.
The baseboard may comprise a flat base and the posts are preferably vertical. There may be an equivalent number of lateral and longitudinal rows, preferably 3, 4 or 5 lateral rows with respectively 9, 1 6 and 25 upstanding posts. Each playing unit may comprise a cylindrical bead which is centrally bored so that a multiple or "stack" of playing units are locatable on each post. The game apparatus may have the same number of lateral rows, longitudinal rows and playing units per post. A preferred characterising feature is colour and 50% of the units may be the same colour. In one preferred embodiment the playing units are characterised by four different colours.
By way of example only, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, illustrating an embodiment and in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a game apparatus incorporating nine upstanding posts, Figure 2 is a plan view of Figure 1, Figure 3 is a side elevation of apparatus incorporating sixteen posts, Figure 4 is a plan view of Figure 3, Figure 5 is a side elevation of apparatus incorporating twenty-five posts, and Figure 6 is a plan view of Figure 5.
As shown in the drawings the apparatus comprises a rectangular baseboard 1 which rests on a suitable surface. In the embodiment of Figure 1 and 2 there are a total of nine upright posts 2 arranged in three lateral rows vertical plane XX and planes parallel thereto, and three longitudinal rows (vertical plane YY and planes parallel thereto). Each upright post 2 can carry up to three playing units 3 which are in the form of cylindrical beads with a central bore for connection to the posts. For two players the units 3 are divided into two different colours, fourteen of one colour and fourteen of a different colour. At the start of the game there are no units on the board, each player having his own pile of coloured units.
An alternative embodiment is illustrated in Figures 3 and 4, wherein the baseboard has four lateral and longitudinal rows, sixteen posts and four playing units per post. The sixty-four playing units are characterised by two different colours if two people are playing the game, and four colours for four players. Each unit bears only one characterising colour.
A further more complex embodiment is shown in Figures 5 and 6 wherein the baseboard has five lateral and longitudinal rows, twenty-five posts and one hundred and twenty-five units. Again, up to four different colours may be employed for characterising the units.
In order to play a game for two people, it is initially decided who starts and each move consists of placing one unit from the respective player's pile onto one of the posts. The unit that has been placed is not subsequently moved during the game. The object of the game is to obtain the most lines of three, four or five of the player's colour.
Using the apparatus of Figures 1 and 2 it is possible to obtain forty-nine lines of three units.
Allowable lines are defined as: 9 vertical lines, 1 8 horizontal lines (plan), 6 horizontal-diagonal lines (plan) 12 diagonal lines (elevation) and 4 diagonal lines on plan diagonal lines.
With the apparatus of Figures 3 and 4, up to 76 lines of four units can be obtained as follows:- 1 6 vertical lines, 32 horizontal lines (plan), 8 horizontal on diagonal lines (plan) 16 diagonal lines (elevation) and 4 diagonal lines on plan diagonal lines.
Using the apparatus of Figures 5 and 6, up to 109 lines of five units can be obtained as follows: 25 vertical lines, 50 horizontal lines, 10 horizontal lines on diagonal (plan), 20 diagonal lines (elevation) and 4 diagonal lines on diagonal line (plan).
Two people in a game can play as partners against another two people. It is not necessary to have all the posts completely filled with playing units.

2. Apparatus according to Claim 1, wherein the baseboard is a flat base and the posts are vertical.
3. Apparatus according to either preceding Claim, wherein the number of lateral rows equals the number of longitudinal rows.
4. Apparatus according to any preceding Claim, including lateral and longitudinal rows selected from 3, 4 and 5.
5. Apparatus according to Claim 4, including a number of posts selected from 9, 1 6 and 25.
6. Apparatus according to any preceding Claim, wherein the number of lateral rows or longitudinal rows equal the number of playing units locatable upon each post.
