Abstract

210,521. Walter, C. M. Nov. 1, 1922. Fluids, regulating volume of flow or pressure of. -The air inlet to a carburettor, the passage around the nozzle or the mixture outlet may be varied by providing within the rigid carburettor passage a flexible surface or membrane of rubber or other expansible material to which fluid pressure may be applied externally and uniformly around its periphery to cause it to extend towards the axis of the passage whilst preserving a bore of substantially Venturi form. The casing b has a gauze-covered air inlet g and an outlet c controlled by a throttle valve l. The passage around the nozzle d is varied by applying liquid or gaseous pressure to the exterior of the membrane l formed in one with a cylindrical part j secured in a recessed part of the casing b by undercut ends h and spring rings k. The membrane l is of decreased thickness towards the centre in order that it may expand more at that part. The fluid is admitted by a pipe o and a short tube m a head p on which may be drawn against the rubber j by a nut q, or the tube may be vulcanized into the rubber before the latter is inserted in the carburettor. The fuel nozzle d may lie along the axis of the tube or be at right-angles thereto. The tube o may lead to an elastic fluid reservoir enclosed within a cylinder, a piston in which may be moved by a coarse-pitch screw rotated by hand through a Bowden cable, or automatically in accordance with engine speed. When actuated by hand, a scale may be provided to indicate the minimum bore and bores for ordinary running. The piston may be connected to a centrifugal governor driven by the engine. The membrane may also be actuated by the pressure of the lubricating oil which may act directly upon the piston referred to above, or upon the elastic fluid reservoir through linkages. According to the Provisional Specification, the membrane may be actuated (1) by glycerine or other fluid to which pressure may be applied by a piston, (2) by a diaphragm of substantial area exposed to the atmosphere on one side and (3) by an iris diaphragm encircling the membrane at its centre, or by a series of laminae normally parallel to the axis of the tube and attached at one end to a ring which may be rotated.
