Abstract

A retaining device (7) for a filter bag (10) of a suction cleaner, is arranged to be fitted in an opening in a container (11) for housing the filter bag, and includes an elbowed lever (2) hingedly mounted on pivot (9) on a base of the device. The lever (2) has a forked end (3) embracing the periphery (4) of an air inlet nozzle (1) of the device and is constructed to retain a base plate (10A) of the filter bag when the bag is fitted on the device. The lever (2) is resiliently biased by a spring (8) and has an opening (6) in which an edge of the base plate (10A) can engage, fitting of the base plate (10A) on the device causing the elbowed lever (2) to pivot into a position, against the bias of the spring, in which position the filter bag by its base plate (10A) is held on the retaining device. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Retaining device for a filter bag of a suction cleaner This invention relates to a retaining device for a filter bag of a suction cleaner.
A known hand-held suction cleaner is provided with an external container for a paper filter bag in which it is necessary for the filter bag to be detachably mounted in the container on a retaining device. This is often achieved by an elastic clamp which grips part of a plate of the filter bag, the plate providing mechanical strength in the region of the mounting. This construction has some disadvantages in that the elastic clamp always has to be clamped and unclamped whenever the filter bag is inserted and removed. It is easy to over-tension the clamp while doing this, thus ruining the clamp. Furthermore, it is difficult with such a construction to achieve a good arrangement for the insertion of the paper filter bag because of poor space conditions.
According to the present invention, there is provided a retaining device for a filter bag of a suction cleaner, the device being arranged to be fitted in an opening in a container for housing the filter bag, and the device includ- ing an elbowed lever hingedly mounted on an axis on a base of the device, one end of said lever being forked and embracing the periphery of an air inlet nozzle of the device and being constructed to retain a base plate of a filter bag when the bag is fitted onto the device.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawng, in which: Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of part of a retaining device for a filter bag for a suction cleaner, the figure showing a filter bag fitted on the device and the device fitted in a filter bag container of the suction cleaner, and Figure 2 is a plan view of part of the retaining device (alone) shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 shows a retaining device 7 on which is attached a paper filter bag 10 by means of a holding base plate 1 0A thereof. The means of attachment of the device 7 is an elbowed lever 2 which, as can be seen in Fig. 2, has forked ends 3 embracing the periphery 4 of an air inlet nozzle 1 for the bag 10. The elbowed lever 2 is hingedly mounted on an axis 9 on the base of the device 7 and a spring 8 bears between the base of the device 7 and one fork 3 of the lever 2 so that, without a holding plate 10A in place, the elbowed lever 2 would be turned or hinged by the spring 8 to the right as viewed in Fig. 1.
Fig. 2 does not show the filter bag 10 in place but the lever 2 is shown in the position which it adopts once a filter bag plate 1 0A has been fitted on the device 7.
Refering back to Fig. 1, assuming that initially no filter bag 10 is fitted on the device 7, if now a filter bag 10 with its holding plate 1 OA is put into position, the edge of the plate 10A runs down on a free end 5 of the lever 2, slides into an opening 6 on the free end 5 and engages in the opening 6 and, in so doing, simultaneously depresses the forked ends 3 against the pressure of the spring 8 so that the elbowed lever 2 assumes the position shown with the filter bag 10 retained on the device 7, the free end 5 being in the form of a flexible tongue.
In this way the filter bag 10, together with the retaining device 7, can be inserted into an opening in a container 11 of the suction cleaner for housing the filter bag 10. When the filter bag 10 is to be discarded, it is necessary merely to pull the retaining device 7 with the filter bag 10 out of the container 11 and then to press the free end 5 of the lever 2 sideways away from the bag 10 to release the bag 10 with its plate 1 0A from the device 7.
It will be seen that the retaining device 7 cannot be inserted in the container 11 without a filter bag 10 in place because the free end 5 of the lever 2 has pivoted sideways to such an extent that it obstructs passage of the device 7 into the opening of the container 11.
It will be appreciated that, with the present device, a filter bag can easily be attached to and released from the retaining device 7.
