Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to electrical connection arrangements
The present invention relates to electrical connection arrangements.
Such connection arrangements are required to enable external connections to be made to circuits carried on printed circuit boards and usually comprise a multi-contact connector which engages conductive elements on the printed circuit board. Sometimes, however, the need arises to use a connector and a circuit board which are not compatible, for example, the configuration of the connections on the circuit board may differ from the configuration of the contacts of the connector.
According to the present invention an electrical connection arrangement for enabling a connector having connection elements arranged in a first configuration to be interfaced with a circuit board having connection elements arranged in a second configuration, different from said first configuration, includes; an intermediate circuit assembly having a first set of conductive portions arranged in said first configuration, a second set of conductive portions arranged in said second configuration and electrical interconnections connecting respective conductive portions of the first set to predetermined ones of the conductive portions of the second set; first conductors connecting each conductive portion of said first set to a different one of the corresponding connection elements on said connector respectively; second conductors connecting each conductive portion of said second set to a different one of the corresponding connection elements on the circuit board respectively; and means for mounting the intermediate circuit assembly on the circuit board.
The intermediate circuit assembly may be a further circuit board mounted perpendicular to the surface of the first printed circuit board.
The connector may comprise a mating plug and socket assembly.
An electrical connection arrangement embodying the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of part of a printed circuit board,
Figure 2 shows a side view of an electrical connection arrangement embodying the present invention, and
Figure 3 shows an arrangement of conductors on a further printed circuit board utilised in the embodiment of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings, a printed circuit board 1 has a row of connection elements comprising conductive pads 2 situated adjacent one of its edges 3. The conductive pads 2 surround platedthrough holes 4 which extend through the circuit board 1 to a complementary set of conductive pads 2 on the other side of the circuit board 1. The conductive pads 2 are connected to circuitry (not shown) on one or both sides of the circuit board 1 and are utilised as terminations to enable external connections to be made to the circuit board 1. Typically, in the present example, the plated-through holes 4 are equally spaced at 0.1 in. pitch. It is often advantageous for economic reasons, for example, to use a readily available standard circuit board.
The printed circuit board 1 may be one of many such boards mounted in a unit of electronic apparatus, for example, and it is frequently preferred to use a readily available standard socket to provide connections to the circuit board 1 from, for example, a connecting cable which is terminated in a mating plug. A substantially channel sectioned member 5, secured to the frame of the apparatus, extends along the edges 3 of the printed circuit boards 1 and serves to supportthe circuit boards 1 attheir edges 3. An electrical connector socket 6, having say 25 connection contacts, is mounted in the member 5 adjacent the edge 3 of each printed circuit board 1. Typically, standard 25-way connector sockets, such as the sockets 6, each contain two rows of contacts (not shown) spaced at 0.108in. pitch. Thus it will be seen that the spacings of the conductive pads 2 on the circuit board 1 and the contacts of the socket 6 are incompatible.
Conductive extensions 7 of the individual socket contacts extend from the back of each connector socket 6 and pass through holes 8 arranged in corresponding positions in a second printed circuit board 9 mounted perpendicularto the first printed circuit board 1 and abutting the member 5. The holes 8 are formed through conductive pads 10 on one face of the second printed circuit board 9 and the conductive extensions 7 are soldered to the pads 10.
The second printed circuit board 9 has a further set of holes 11 formed through further conductive pads 12. The holes 11 are arranged at the same pitch as the holes 4 of the printed circuit board 1. Conductive tracks 13 on the face of the printed circuit board 9 provide interconnections between the conductive pads 10 and the conductive pads 12.
A contact assembly 14 consists of a number of conductive pins 15 embedded in a length of square section insulating material 16. The pins 15 are spaced at the same pitch as the plated-through holes 4 in the printed circuit board 1 and the platedthrough holes 11 in the printed circuit board 9. The pins 15 are formed in the shape of a right angle, one end of each pin 15 engaging a hole 4 in the printed circuit board 1 and the other end of each pin engaging a hole 11 in the printed circuit board 9. The respective ends of the pins 15 are finally soldered into the holes 4 and 11 to provide an electrical connection between each corresponding pair of conductive pads 2 and 12 on respective circuit boards 1 and 9.
The conductive tracks 13 interconnecting the conductive pads 10 and 12 on the printed circuit board 9 are of course arranged to provide the required interconnections between the conductve pads 2 on the printed circuit board 1 and the contacts of the 25-way connector socket 6. A mating 25-way connector plug 17 may be utilised in conjunction with the socket 6 to provide external connections to the printed circuit board 1 or, alternatively individual leads fitted with suitable plugs may be used.
It will be realised that various modifications may be made to the described arrangement without flleparting from the essential feature of the invention, namely, the use of an insarrnediate circuit board to convert the connection configuration of a first printed circuit board to that of a connector having a different connection configuration. For example, the printed circuit board 9 need not be mounted perpendicular to the printed circuit board 1 but could be mounted parallel thereto. In this case the contacts 15 could be straight and the conductive extensions 7 formed at right angles. Although, in order to keep the cost low the second printed circuit board in the described embodiment carries conductive pads and tracks on one side only, the pads and tracks could of course be disposed on both sides of the board in conjunction with plated-through hole connections. It may be possible in some circumstances to dispense with the support provided for the further printed circuit board 9 by the channel sectioned member 5. In this case the printed circuit board 9 would be supported solely by the conductors 7 and 15.
