Abstract

An identity card is about 50 millimetres square and includes a colour photograph of the head and shoulders of the subject, an X-ray photograph which is preferably of their teeth and jaws and a sheet bearing information such as the name, address and blood group of the subject, the photographs and sheet being encased in a transparent plastics cover to preserve the contents. In usual use the colour photograph serves to identify the subject to e.g. a dentist, who makes use of the X-ray photograph and information when considering treatment. If the subject is injured in an accident, the card may establish his identity.

Description

SPECIFICATION An identity card This invention relates to an identity card which would be-carried by the person who is the subject of the card, the card giving personal information of the subject.
The carrying of personal identity cards is becoming much more prevalent since it has become realised that such cards are extremely useful in many situations. For example, in the case of an accident, the personal particulars of the person carrying the card is often useful. There is, however, one particular situation where an identity card is of great use; this is in the practice of dentistry. Hitherto, no identity card has been specifically produced for the purpose of facilitating dental treatment by dentists other than the patient's normal dentist, who would have a record of previous treatment.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a personal identity card with particular reference to facilitate dental treatment, although the invention is not limited to an identity card for such purpose.
According to the present invention there is provided an identity card bearing personal information of the subject of the card, the card comprising an external photograph of the face of the subject, an x-ray photograph of at least a portion of the subject and a sheet bearing written information concerning the subject, the photographs and sheet being incased in a transparent plastics cover so that the information thereof is available.
The invention also includes the external photograph being in colour and of the head and shoulders of the subject. Also, in its specific application to dentistry, the x-ray photograph will be of the teeth and jaws of the subject.
The written information which is contained on the identity card may include the-date on which the card is created, the name, address, date of birth and blood group of the subject of the card and also whether or not the subject wishes to donate one or more organs after their death and an identification of those organs.
The transparent plastics cover is preferably heat sealed using a laminator so that the photographs and written information will be preserved.
Preferably, the card will measure not more than 50 millimetres square so that the x-ray photograph may be viewed on a standard 35 millimetre slide projector.
In order to illustrate the invention, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing which shows one embodiment of identity card in accordance with the invention. In the drawing FIGURE 1 is a front view of an identity card; and FIGURE 2 is a rear view of the card of Figure 1.
The identity card shows, on its front face, an external photograph 1 of the subject of the card.
This photograph 1 is preferably of the head and shoulders of the subject and also preferably is in colour. The identity card also contains an x-ray photograph 2 of at least a portion of the subject of the card and this portion may be the teeth and jaws of the subject, although some other part of - the body of the subject may be chosen. Indeed, an x-ray photograph of the entire body may form x-ray photograph 2.
Whilst the external photograph 1 appears on only one face of the identity card, the x-ray photograph 2 will, of course, appear on both faces so that x-ray photograph may be viewed by the use of an ordinary 35 millimetre slide projector or any similar viewing device for viewing transparencies.
On the reverse side of the identity card is a blank area or sheet 3 bearing written information concerning the subject of the card. This written information may be the information previously mentioned or any other relevant information about the subject.
The photographs 1 and 2 and the sheet 3 are encased between two sheets of transparent plastics 4, the entire card being not more than 50 millimetres square. These dimensions are in no way critical except that to have the card of this - size enables ready viewing of the x-ray photograph through a slide projector.
The invention provides an identity card which may be carried by the person who is the subject of the card and that person's own dentist may keep a duplicate identity card; If the subject of the card has dental difficulties and has to consult a dentist other than their normal dentist, then production of the identity card will facilitate the treatment. The identity card may, of course, be extremeleuseful in the event of a serious accident in enabling identity of the person concerned.
1. An identity card bearing personal information of the subject of the card, the card comprising an external photograph of the face of the subject, an x-ray photograph of at least a portion of the subject and a sheet bearing written information concerning the subject, the photographs and the sheet being encased in a transparent plastics cover so that the information thereof is available.
2. An identity card as claimed in Claim 1, in which the external photograph is of the head and shoulders of the subject and the photograph is in colour.
3. An identity card as claimed in either Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which the x-ray photograph is of the teeth and jaws of the subject.
4. An identity card as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, in which the written information contained on the identity card includes the dateon which the card is created, the name, address, date of birth and blood.group of the subject of the card.
5. An identity card as claimed in Claim 4, in which additionally the written information contained on the identity card includes whether or not the subject wishes to denote one or more human organs after their death and an identification of those organs.
