Abstract

A silicon rubber cover (20) for an external limb prosthesis (e.g. an artificial hand, arm or leg) comprises high- temperature-vulcanised silicon rubber shaped to conform to such a prosthesis. The cover may be made by vacuum- moulding a partly-cured silicon rubber preform (e.g. sheets 14, 16) on an appropriately-shaped mandrel or former, e.g. a hand-shaped mandrel (2) having suction holes (4), and vulcanising at e.g. 200 DEG C by pressing using heated bolsters (8, 10). The shaping can also be carried out by stretching a blow-moulding on to the mandrel or former, or compression or injection moulding. A layer of transparent silicon rubber may be superposed on a layer of opaque flesh-coloured silicon rubber, with red and blue particles between the layers. The cover may be shaped as a glove or stocking. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Silicon rubber covers for external prostheses -The present invention relates to silicon rubber covers for external limb prostheses, for example a silicon rubber cover for an artificial arm, our a silicon rubber glove for an artificial hand. The cover is usually made to have the appearance of natural skin.
One type of cover which has been used for this purpose is a textile surgical stocking having a flesh colour. The stocking has hoop elasticity so that it can stretch radially outwardly and conform to the shape of an artificial leg. A portion of the surgical hose making up the stocking may extend over a joint of the artificial leg, and its ability to stretch in the longitudinal direction as well allows the leg to bend at the joint without undue resistance from the stocking.
However, the material is not resistanttothe ingress of dirt, and is permeable to water.
To overcome this problem, it has already been proposed to coat a thin woven textile base with a thin polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film. The resulting material is applied above and below the knee joint of an artificial leg, but it cannot satisfactorily cover the joint itself because the modulus of elasticity of the material is too high to allow sufficient freedom of movement at the joint.
An improved elasticity, i.e. a lower modulus of elasticity, can be obtained using silicon rubber. For example, a glove for covering an artificial hand has been made using a rotary moulding technique. Silicon rubber liquid is poured into a hand-shaped hollow in a mould, which is then rotated in such a fashion that the interior of the mould is evenly coated.
The coating is cured by room temperature vulcanising (RTV). A glove manufactured in this way has a low elastic modulus, and therefore gives little resistance to movement of the digits of an artificial hand wearing the glove. Unfortunately, however, the rubber material prepared in this way tears too easily, and the rotary moulding technique is time consuming and therefore uneconomical. Similar problems would arise with an arm cover made by the RTV method.
An aim of the present invention is to provide a siticon rubber covering for a prosthesis, for example a cover for an artificial arm, which does notteartoo easily and which is made by a more economical method.
Accordingly, in one aspect of the present invention, the covering comprises high temperature vulcanised silicon rubber shaped to conform to a prosthesis.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of making a covering for a prosthesis, for example a cover for an artificial arm, comprising high temperature vulcanising (HTV) a silicon rubber layer shaped by a mandrel or former.
In one example of such a method, calendered sheets or an extruded tubular piece or preform of partly cured silicon rubber is stretched, blow moulded or vacuum moulded onto a mandrel or former which is shaped like a prosthesis, for exam ple an arm, a leg, or a hand. The rubber is then heat cured to retain the shape of the mandrel or former.
This may be done by bolsters which press and heat the rubber against the mandrel or former, or by means of a cylindrical microwave oven surrounding the mandrel or former, or by any other established heating method. In the case of an extruded tubular piece or preform, the partly cured material can simply be manipulated by hand to conform closely to the shape of the mandrel or former prior to the heat curing step.
Instead of using partly cured silicon rubber sheet, liquid silicon rubber can be compression moulded or injection moulded into shape priorto high temperature vulcanising.
A more realistic skin-like appearance can be given to the covering by using two layers of silicon rubber.
The first is opaque and flesh coloured, and the second is transparent, being either colourless or slightly tinted, and is applied on top of the first layer so that it is on the outside of the finished article. An even higher level of cosmesis may be obtained by scattering finely chopped red and blue fibre on the inner layer before applying the outer layer. The tackiness of the partly cured rubber assists in the application of the coloured fibre particles. HTV fuses the layers together.
Examples of coverings in accordance with the present invention, and examples of methods in accordance with the present invention, are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective elevational view of apparatus used in one method; Figure 2 is an elevational part-sectional view of apparatus used in the method; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a glove made in accordance with the method shown in Figures 1 and 2; Figures 4 to 7 show successive stages in the manufacture of a covering for an artificial arm; and Figures 8 to 11 show successive stages in the manufacture of a covering for an artificial leg.
A hand-shaped mandrel 2 shown in Figure 1 is formed with suction holes 4 which are all in fluid communication with an outlet 6. Two bolsters 8 and 10 are arranged to the rear and fore of the mandrel.
The bolster 8 is formed with a recess 12 shaped to conform to the back of the mandrel 2, and the bolster 10 has a recess (not shown) shaped to conform to the front of the hand-shaped mandrel 2. The bolsters 8 and 10 are provided with respective means (not shown) for heating them. They are also moveably mounted so that they can be brought together with the mandrel 2 enclosed within their recesses, there being a gap of about 60 thou everywhere between the mandrel and the bolsters.
When the apparatus shown in Figure 1 is used to make a glove, one sheet 14 of partly-cured silicon rubber is placed between the back of the mandrel 2 and the bolster 8, and another sheet 16 of the same material is placed between the front of the mandrel 2 and the other bolster 10. The sheets are brought to gether on either side of the hand-shaped mandrel 2 and air is sucked from between the mandrel and the rubber sheets via the holes 4 and the outlet 6. The pre-heated bolsters 8 and 10 are then brought together so that they press the rubber sheets 14 and 16 against the hand-shaped mandrel and at the same time heat them. The high temperature vulcanising (HTV) cures the rubber fully so that it retains the shape of the mandrel 2 after bolsters 8 and 10 have been moved apart and the rubber has been cooled and removed from the mandrel 2.
The finished article is shown in Figure 3. The glove 20 has a seam 22 where the two sheets 14 and 16 met around the periphery of the mandrel 2.
Instead of the bolsters 8 and 10, the rubber may be heat treated by means of a cylindrical microwave oven 18 shown in section in Figure 2.
If more than one layer is to be applied to the mandrel, for example to obtain an improved skin-like appearance for the glove as described herein, at least the outer layer would be blow-moulded onto the mandrel. The heat treatment would then be as for a single-layer glove.
For making a covering for an artificial arm an appropriately shaped mandrel 24 as shown in Figure 4 is used, with an included angle of about 1350 between its upper and lower parts. As with the mandrel for the hand, mandrel 24 has a number of suction holes 26 distributed over its surface, all the suction holes being in fluid communication with an outlet 28. Figures 5 to 7 show successive stages in the method. An extruded tubular length of partly cured silicon rubber 30 is slid onto the mandrel 24, and air is sucked out from between the rubber 30 and the mandrel 24 via the suction holes 26 and the outlet 28.
A cylindrical microwave oven 32 shown in section in Figure 7 is then arranged around the mandrel and rubber to heatthe latter and complete the curing by HTV.
Figures 8 to 11 show the same method applied to the manufacture of a covering for an artificial leg. A leg-shaped mandrel 34, with an included angle of about 1650 between its upper and lower parts has suction holes 36 distributed over its surface and connected to outlet 38. An extruded tubular length of partly cured silicon rubber 40 is slid onto the mandrel 34 and air is sucked out through the outlet 38 so that the rubber convering conforms more closely to the surface of the mandrel 34. A microwave oven 42 is then used to perform high temperature vulcanising of the rubber. The resulting leg covering is then cooled and removed from the mandrel, the covering retaining the shape of the leg.
The curing schedules involved in the HTV processes described herein vary according to the partlycured silicon rubber used at the start. Thus during an HTV process, the temperature of the rubber is raised to around 200 C, and the period for which this temperature is maintained varies from a hour to 4 hours.
