Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for the Continuous Application of a Uniform Coating to a Web of Material The invention relates to an apparatus for the continuous application of a uniform coating to a web of material travelling over a roller, in which a rolling doctor blade bears under pre-tension against the web of material supported on the roller and coating material is supplied from above to the contact point.
An apparatus of this type is already known for example from U.S. Patent Specification 2 946 307. In this known apparatus, the coating material is supplied without separate metering to a sump between the rolling doctor blade and the web of material to be coated. According to the nature and viscosity of the coating material, a greater or lesser formation of bubbles occurs in this sump during the coating, which may lead to non-uniformity of the finished coating.
The objective of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the aforedescribed type, which eliminates the drawbacks of the known apparatus and provides an acceptable quality of the coating with a very varied nature and viscosity of the coating material supplied.
This objective is fulfilled according to the invention due to the fact that the coating material can be supplied continuously under the effect of gravity by way of a lock-type pre-metering device to the contact point between the rolling doctor blade and web of material on the roller. The locktype pre-metering device supplies to the contact point of the rolling doctor blade on the web of material only as much coating material as is required for the coating with a slight excess. The coating material is applied to a web of material in a closed layer by pre-metering device and scraped off by the rolling doctor blade at the point of contact without the formation of a sump. Trouble free coating is thus achieved even with greatly varying viscosity of the coating material. The apparatus can thus be used very universally from moistening with water to coating with highly viscous material.
According to one development of the invention, the pre-metering device and rolling doctor blade are incorporated in a frame separate from the machine frame. The apparatus can thus be incorporated subsequently with simple means in existing material-processing lines, in the region of a roller, without fundamental changes to the machine frame becoming necessary.
Appropriately, on the side adjacent the web of material, the pre-metering device comprises a lock wall with upper edge extending parallel to the axis of the rolling doctor blade and a guiding device guiding the coating material in a leakproof manner to the contact point of the rolling doctor blade, in which case the guiding device may comprise an apron adjoining the lock wall at an obtuse angle, the apron having a linear front edge and the guiding device may also comprise deflectors arranged at right angles to the latter, in the region of the side edges of the web of material to be coated. This construction of the premetering device ensures acceptable transfer of the film of coating material to the web of material during pre-metering.
Furthermore, the pre-metering device is advantageously constructed so that it is able to tilt about a pivot parallel to the contact point of the rolling doctor blade. The quantity of coating material flowing over the lock wall can thus be adjusted by tilting the pre-metering device.
The deflectors can be adjusted at right angles to the apron for adjusting the coating width.
In order to be able to stop the pre-metering quickly if necessary, the pre-metering device is appropriately able to be swung away from the web of material, so that the upper edge is raised.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawing and is described in detail hereafter.
The single figure of the drawing is a side view of the coating apparatus according to the invention, partly in section.
The coating apparatus illustrated in the drawing comprises a rolling doctor blade 1, with a doctor blade rod 3 mounted to rotate in a resilient rolling doctor blade bed 2. The doctor blade rod 3 is pressed under tension against a web of material 4 to be coated, which is in turn supported by a roller 5.
Above the rolling doctor blade 1, a premetering device 6 is mounted in the same frame 7 as the rolling doctor blade 1. The pre-metering device 6 comprises a container 8 for coating material and on the side adjacent the web of material comprises a lock wall 9 with upper edge 10. The pre-metering device 6 is able to tilt about a pivot 12 extending parallel to the contact line 11 of the doctor blade 3 with the web of material 4. By tilting about this pivot, the quantity of coating material flowing over the upper edge 10 of the lock wall 9 can be adjusted. On the side of the pre-metering device 6 remote from the web of material 4, a rear lock wall 13 is provided, over which excess coating material from the premetering device 6 is discharged to a sump 14.
Adjoining the lower end of the front lock wall 9 at an obtuse angle is an apron 15, which terminates in a linear front edge 16. The front edge 1 6 extends over the entire width of the web of material 4 to be coated. Located at right angles to the lock wall 9 and to the apron 15, in the region of the side edges of the web of material to be coated, are four deflectors 1 7, which extend in a leakproof manner as far as the web of material 4 to be coated. The deflectors can be constructed to be adjustable at right angles to the apron 15, in order to adjust the coating width.
Above the upper edge 10 of the lock wall 9, during the coating operation and according to the tilted osition of the premetering device 6, an adjustable, uniform thick film of coating material is discharged at the apron 15. The front edge 16 of the apron extends in a leakproof manner as far as the web of material 4 to be coated and transfers the pre-metered film of coating material to the web of material 4 to be coated. The rolling doctor blade 1 located at a short distance therebelow receives the fine coating, in which case no sump occurs between the rolling doctor blade 1 and material web 4, but solely the excess coating material which is scraped off passes over the rolling doctor blade 1 and is returned to the sump 14. Thus the formation of bubbles in the region of the rolling doctor blade is largely prevented, whereas a continuous coating film is simultaneously ensured. It is possible to achieve uniform coating for coating materials of varying properties and viscosities. For example, the apparatus is very suitable for the uniform moistening of paper webs with water.
Furthermore, the pre-metering device 6 is able to tilt about the pivot so that the upper edge 10 is raised and then projects by a small amount above the upper edge of the rear lock wall 13. This tilting movement is used for interrupting premetering, due to which only minimal residues of coating material are present on the rolling doctor blade 1 for example in the case of a tear in the web or if the apparatus is stopped. On the other hand, the upper edge 10 of the front lock wall 9 is tilted upwards only so far that the majority of coating material is able to remain in the container 8.
As mentioned, the rolling doctor blade 1 and pre-metering device 6 are mounted on the same frame 7 independently of the machine frame. This fact and the narrow construction of the apparatus facilitate subsequent incorporation in a material web processing line without fundamental changes to the machine frame of the line.
