Description

SPECIFICATION Decorative Moulding with Metallic Appearance This invention relates to a decorative moulding suitable for use in an automobile and having a coloured metallic appearance which is intended to match the exterior finish of an automobile body.
Some functionally shaped mouldings used on automobiles, for example those used to frame the quarter-light, are conventionally made of metal which has been painted in order that the appearance of the mouldings matches that of the automobile body. Such mouldings are conventionally secured to the body by metallic clips which have a tendency to corrode during use. Moreover, the paint coatings tend to chip during use, detracting from the appearance of the moulding. Further, the paint bond often fails as the paint ages.
Many of these problems would be alleviated by a moulding formed from a thermoplastic plastics material such as a polyvinyl chloride which is largely impervious to rust and corrosion due to the elements. It has been found difficult, however, to extrude the irregular shape required of such mou;dings and still provide a uniform distribution of metallic pigment on the surface of the moulding which, of course, is required in order for the moulding to match the automobile body in appearance or colour as required of a decorative trim. When extruding a metallic pigmentcontaining thermoplastic plastics material to form a moulding having an irregularly-shaped crosssection, the die required to give the moulding its irregular shape apparently causes shear forces which disturb the flow and effect the uniformity of the distribution of metallic pigment in the thermoplastic plastics material. The end result is that the moulding has streaks and presents a nonuniform appearance. In contrast, in an extrusion with a die of simple or plain cross-section, a uniform finish can be obtained because the flow of the plastics material during the extrusion is relatively smooth and undisturbed, resulting in a consistent and uniform distribution of the pigment in the thermoplastic plastics material; however, a plain extrusion will not provide a moulding having the irregular shape required of a functional moulding.
The present invention therefore provides a decorative and protective moulding comprising an extruded elongate body having a cross-section of complex irregular shape and having at least one elongate channel, and, laminated on the body, an elongate, relatively thin layer of extruded, metallic pigment-containing thermoplastic plastics material.
The present invention thus provides a decorative moulding having an irregular crosssection and yet presenting a surface having a uniform, coloured, metallic appearance.
The elongate body may have, in addition, laminated on a portion thereof, a bright decorative layer. This can give a portion of the moulding a bright chrome-like appearance.
Conveniently, but not necessarily, the bright decorative layer is coated with at least one transparent protective layer; the thermoplastic plastics material of the thin layer is a polyvinyl chloride; the elongate body is made of a polyvinyl chloride; or the elongate body has a durometer (hardness) in the range from 80 Shore A to 60 Shore D.
The present invention also provides a decorative and protective moulding comprising an extruded elongate body having a cross-section of complex irregular shape and having at least one elongate channel; an elongate, relatively thin layer of extruded, metallic pigment-containing thermoplastic plastics material laminated onto the elongate body; an elongate ridge laminated onto a portion of the relatively thin layer of thermoplastic plastics material; and an elongate reflective, decorative layer laminated onto the ridge.
The ridge is preferably harder than the elongate body; and the reflective decorative layer is preferably coated with at least one transparent protective layer.
The present invention further provides a method of making a decorative and protective moulding, which comprises extruding an elongate body having a cross-section of complex irregular shape and having at least one channel; extruding a relatively thin layer of a metallic pigmentcontaining thermoplastic plastics material; and laminating the relatively thin layer onto a portion of the surface of the elongate body.
Conveniently the laminating is accomplished by passing the relatively thin layer of metallic pigment-containing thermoplastic plastics material and the elongate body between a pair of rollers.
Conveniently the laminating is accomplished by co-extruding the thin layer of metallic pigmentcontaining thermoplastic plastics material and the elongate body.
The method may also include laminating a decorative layer on a portion of the surface of the said elongate body.
The method may also inciude laminating a ridge of a plastics material on a portion of the relatively thin layer after laminating a decorative layer on the ridge.
The moulding of the present invention serves a decorative function by presenting a coloured metallic appearance which can be further enhanced with a bright chrome-like strip along a portion thereof. In addition the moulding also serves to protect the edge to which it is attached and, when used around an automobile window, can act as a drip guide to prevent water from flowing down and into the window recess. The moulding of the present invention is particularly, but not exclusively, adapted for use as a decorative and functional moulding for framing the rear portion of a quarter-light of an automobile, and the following disclosure of the present invention is cast in terms appropriate for this contemplated use of the moulding of the present invention, although it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that the moulding of the present invention can be advantageously applied to other parts of automobiles or to vans or other supporting structures such as appliances.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view, in section and broken away, of one embodiment of udecorative moulding in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of an alternative embodiment of a decorative moulding in accordance with the present invention.
Referring now to Figure 1 of the drawing, a moulding of the present invention, generally indicated by the reference numeral 1, has a curved top and sides, and includes an elongate body 2 having a complex and irregular crosssection. Elongate body 2 is provided with a channel 6, a notch 7, and a cavity 4 defined by an inner surface 8 of an inclined lip 10 and a bottom face 12 of the body 2. The structure of body 2 is thus characterized by a relatively complex crosssection such as is suitable to bond onto, and be retained by, a flange for example as can be found around a quarter-light of a conventional automobile. The cross-section illustrated is merely one example of bodies having relatively complex cross-sections.
Laminated onto an area 14 of the top surface of the body 2 is a thermoplastic layer 1 6, i.e. a layer of a thermoplastic plastics material. The thermoplastic layer 1 6 contains flaked metallic pigment 20 which imparts colour and a metallic appearance to the layer. Thus, the thermoplastic layer 1 6 can have an appearance substantially the same as metallic paint on an automobile body.
Laminated onto an area 15 of the top surface of the body 2 is a decorative laminate of a plastic film layer 1 8 which has a bright, reflective decorative layer 1 9 thereon. Suitable layers 1 8 and 1 9 can be provided by metallized plastic film such as a metallized polyester film, for example that film available under the registered Trade Mark "Mylar", produced by the du Pont Company.
Covering and protecting the decorative layer 1 9 is a clear layer 22 of a transparent vinyl material or another suitable transparent material. Opposite edges 24 and 26 of the clear layer 22 are embedded in the thermoplastic layer 1 6 and body 2 respectively. It will be appreciated that materials which can be used for decorative layer 19 are subject to discoiouration if exposed to atmospheric elements; however, as opposite edges 28 and 30 of layers 18 and 1 9 lie underneath the clear layer 22, they are protected from exposure to the elements and the decorative layer 19 is therefore protected against resulting deterioration. The ends (not shown) of the elongate moulding 1 will also be protected or sealed against the elements to protect decorative layer 1 9 by covering each end with a protective material as by end-capping or end-dipping each end.
Optimally, but this is not shown in the drawing, an additional layer of acrylic material can be coated onto the clear vinyl layer to afford protection against deterioration of the decorative layer 1 9 by ultraviolet radiation. Also, it will be apparent that other layers such as metal foil could be substituted for plastic film layer 1 8 and decorative layer 1 9.
In accordance with the method of the present invention, the body 2 and thermoplastic layer 1 6 are both made by separately but conventionally extruding suitable thermoplastic plastic materials.
Then the thermoplastic layer 1 6 is laminated onto the body 2. This could be done, for example, by simuitaneously extruding both body 2 and thermoplastic layer 1 6 through separate dies and then immediately pressing them together by passage between rollers to laminate one to the other, or by co-extruding the body 2 and thermoplastic layer 1 6 through a co-extrusion die.
In order to provide a moulding having suitable flexibility and strength it has been found that the body 2 can effectively be made of polyvinyl chloride having a durometer hardness of about 80 Shore A to 60 Shore D. The body 2 is made by extrusion through a die having the desired complex, irregular cross-section.
As the body 2 is not exposed to view when in use, there is no need to colour the extrusion or to be concerned about streaking should a pigmentcontaining material be extruded. It is an advantage of the present invention that the body 2 can be made of a lower quality, less expensive material because it is protected physically and visually by the thermoplastic layer 1 6 in one part and by the plastic film layer 1 8 having decorative layer 1 9 and clear layer 22 thereon in another part. Thus, for instance, inhibitors conventionally used to prevent deterioration of a moulding when exposed to ultraviolet light are not necessary in the body 2 as it is not exposed to such light.
The thermoplastic layer 16, on the other hand, is characterized by containing a flaked, metallic pigment of a kind and in an amount sufficient to impart the desired colour and metallic appearance thereto. As can be seen in the drawing, the thermoplastic layer is a relatively thin (compared to the body 2) layer of flaked, metallic pigmentcontaining thermoplastic plastics material which can be conventionally extruded through a simple die without incurring streaking problems; the thermoplastic layer 1 6 preferably has a thickness of from 0.1 to 0.5 millimetre.
The plastic film layer 1 8 and the decorative layer 19 are laminated onto the body 2 in a conventional manner. For example, if metallized Mylar is employed, the metallized Mylar and the body 2 can be passed between rollers, with heat, to effect lamination.
Referring now to Figure 2 of the drawing, another embodiment of a moulding of the present invention is generally indicated by the reference numeral 32. In this embodiment, a thermoplastic layer 34 containing flaked metallic pigment 36 is laminated to an area 38 of the top surface of an elongate body 40 which has a complex crosssection, like body 2. The moulding 32, like moulding 1 of Figure 1, is adapted to be bonded onto and be retained by a flange, for example as can be found around the rear quarter-light of a conventional automobile.
A portion of the thermoplastic layer 34, generally indicated at 42, has a ridge 44 laminated thereon. Similarly to the embodiment of Figure 1, laminated to the top surface 46 of the ridge 44 is a decorative laminate of a plastic film layer 48 having a reflective, decorative layer 50 thereon. Covering and protecting the decorative layer 50 is clear layer 52 of a transparent vinyl material or another suitable transparent material.
The clear layer 52 extends beyond opposite edges 54 and 56 of the decorative layer 50, thereby protecting the decorative layer 50 against elements and resulting deterioration. It is, of course, contemplated that the ends of elongate moulding 32 will also be protected or sealed against the elements, as by end-capping or enddipping.
As in the method of making the embodiment shown in Figure 1, the method of making moulding 32 involves conventionally laminating a separately but conventionally extruded, or coextruded, elongate body 40 and a thermoplastic, metallic pigment-containing layer 34. The ridge 44 is bonded to the thermoplastic, pigmentcontaining layer 34 and to the elongate body 40 by means of a suitable adhesive or by other conventional means, as by heating until the materials bond to each other. Preferably the ridge 44 is made of a harder material than the body 40 so that ridge 44 provides structural strength to the moulding and a good foundation for the plastic film layer 48 and reflective, decorative layer 50, while the use of softer material for the body 40 minimizes cost and contributes to the flexibility of the moulding. The plastic film layer 48 and reflective decorative layer 50 are laminated to the ridge 44 in the same manner as in the previous embodiment. The ridge 44 can be made by conventionally extruding a suitable thermoplastic material.
