Abstract
A synthetic plastics laminate comprises, three layers, the first layer 10 being a layer of plastics material which is permeable to gases and impermeable to liquids, the second layer 12 being a layer of activated carbon cloth or activated carbon particles, or such particles carried by or impregnated in a paper or compressed wood fibre layer or carried on or in a non-woven layer of fibrous material, and the third layer 14 being a layer of material which is the same as or different from the first layer and if the latter is permeable to gases and impermeable to liquids. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Plastics Laminate
This invention relates to a plastics laminate.
According to the invention, there is provided a plastics laminate consisting of, or including, three layers, the first layer being a layer of plastics material which is permeable to gases and impermeable to liquids, the second layer being a layer of activated carbon cloth or activated carbon particles or such particles carried by or impregnated in a paper or compressed wood fibre layer or carried on or in a non-woven layer of fibrous material such as that known by the trade name "Bondina", and the third layer being a layer of material which is the same as or different from the first layer and if the latter is permeable to gases and impermeable to liquids.
Such a laminate is particularly although not exclusively useful in the manufacture of ostomy appliances, for example ostomy bag covers, and ostomy bags.
One example of a suitable plastics material for the first and third layers is a chemically treated polyvinyl chloride known commercially by the name of 'Micropore'.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, there is provided an ostomy bag comprising a pair of facing walls of plastics material welded together around their periphery, and one of which has a hole therethrough to receive the stoma of a user of the bag, in which one or both of the walls of the bag are constituted by a laminate as specified in the second paragraph of this specification.
In one embodiment of the invention the third layer may be a layer of adhesive material, and this may be applied by spraying onto a sheet or strip which forms the first layer, which extends generally horizontally, and which carries activated carbon particles uniformly distriputed thereover.
In this case the adhesive serves to secure and locate the particles on the first layer.
In another embodiment of the invention the first and third layers are the aforesaid 'Micropore' material and the second layer is activated carbon particles. In yet another embodiment of the invention, one or both of the first and third layers is constituted by thin polythene.
Figure 1 illustrates one example of a laminate according to the invention, and
Figure 2 illustrates diagrammatically one method of making a laminate according to the invention.
The laminate shown in Figure 1 consists of a first layer 10 of a plastics material which is permeable to gases and impermeable to liquids, a second layer 12 of activated carbon particles carried by or impregnated in a nonwoven or paper or wood fibre material, and a third layer 14 which is the same material-but not necessarily the same thickness-as the first layer. In the use of such a laminate as one wall of an ostomy bag, gases (flatus) which accumulate in the bag, can escape by direct passage through the wall and in
doing so have substantially all the noxious smells
removed therefrom by the carbon particles, and yet the liquid and solid contents of the bag are securely retained therein.
One method of making a laminate is shown in
Figure 2. A plastics extruder 20 of conventional construction extrudes, generally horizontally, a layer 22 which constitutes the first layer. Just downstream of the extruder 20 is located a hopper 24 containing activated carbon particles, and the mouth 26 of this hopper is adjacent to a distributor 28 which ensures that the particles are distributed over the whole area of the first layer. A second extruder 30 is located downstream of the hopper 24 and extrudes a layer of plastics material on top of the carbon particles, to form the third layer. A pair of rolls 32, or other suitable mechanism, presses assembly together to form the resulting laminate 34.
In an alternative method, the carbon particles may be electrostatically distributed on the first layer before the third layer is applied thereto, and in this case it may be preferred to apply the third layer by spraying on adhesive.
To the best of the Applicant's knowledge and belief, there has been no prior proposal to effect a filtering or deodorising of gas by passing it through a tripple-layer integral laminate of which the middle layer is activated carbon particles or cloth or such particles carried by or impregnated in a paper or compressed wood fibre layer or carried on or in a non-woven layer of fibrous material such as that known by the trade name "Bondina", nor has there been any proposal to, nor practical method to, manufacture of a laminate as defined herein.
Claims (8)

2. A laminate according to claim 1 in which the first layer is chemically treated polyvinyl chloride.
3. A laminate according to claim 1 or 2 in which the third layer is chemically treated polyvinyl chloride.
4. A laminate according to claim 1 or 2 in which the third layer is an adhesive.
5. A laminate according to any one of claims 1-4 in which the second layer is of paper which carries or is impregnated with activated carbon particles.
6. A laminate according to any one of claims 1-4 in which the second layer is of a nonwoven fibrous mat which carries activated carbon particles.
