Abstract

A hydromechanical transmission for tractors has an input shaft (11) which is driven by a power source (10) and drives dual planetary gear sets (17 to 20 and 21 to 24) each geared to two separate variable displacement hydrostatic pump and/or motor units (13, 14) which are arranged in a closed hydrostatic fluid flow circuit, each planetary gear set also driving a counter shaft (C/S) which is utilized as part of a multispeed transmission with an output shaft (12). The hydrostatic units (13, 14) are used as variable displacement pumps or motors to obtain smooth starting and to eliminate the need for a conventional master clutch normally used for starting a vehicle or for shifting gears, these units also being used to provide the high starting torque through hydraulic torque regeneration. <IMAGE>
