Abstract

Sensors (11, 12) which are flux gate magnetometers (Fig. 9, not shown) detect alternating magnetic poles on a rope (7) arranged in a mine shaft and derive electrical signal indicative of the passage of the poles and thus the speed of a mine cage associated with the rope. The signals are protected from common channel interference by circuitry (15, 16) and the speed and direction of the cage are determined by a logic unit (20). Error detection means (17, 18, 19) detect circuit faults which could give rise to misleading positional data. If the sensed speed is too high an alarm is given. The rope may support the mine cage or from a guide rope therefor (Fig. 7, not shown). Should either of the sensor circuits fail an alarm is triggered. <IMAGE>
