Abstract

Several primary controllers 3, 4, 6 are coupled to a data highway 8. A backup director 10 includes an address store 18 storing the highway addresses of the primary controllers. The backup director monitors the primary controllers and, on detecting a failure of one of them, disables it and transfers its highway address to the address means 22 of a backup controller 12, which thereupon replaces the failed primary controller. Each controller also includes a random access memory (RAM) for process data and a read only memory (ROM) for control information. On failure of a primary controller, the backup director transfers the process data from its RAM to the RAM of the backup controller; the backup controller's ROM has the necessary control information already stored in it. <IMAGE>
