Abstract

Apparatus for indicating the level 32 of liquid in a tank using fibre optics in which an elongate prism or an elongate series of prisms 20 is arranged other than parallel to the surface of the liquid. Optic fibre elements 18, 26 terminate at the prism or prisms which are between ends of the elements in the optical path defined by the elements leading from a lamp 12 to an indicator station 30. Liquid level is indicated by the illumination of ends 28, of one series of elements according to which prisms or which part of the prism is in the liquid. In an alternative, floats are arranged to interrupt the optical path between ends of the fibre elements. The principal use of the invention is in road petrol tankers to reduce fire hazards. <IMAGE>
