Abstract

A process for the separation of asphaltic materials from mixtures with other materials comprises contacting the mixture with an aliphatic solvent, having a carbon chain length of at least five carbon atoms under conditions of elevated pressure and temperature so as to dissolve, inter alia, asphaltic material, separating the solution so produced from the mixture and recovering asphaltic material from the solution. The extractions of tar sand and of peat are exemplified.
