Abstract

195,353. Ram, G. H. E. de. March 23, 1922, [Convention date]. Universal joints.-Concentric spherical members are connected by a torque-transmitting member comprising a number of arms jointed about a common centre and constrained to move in a common plane, which coincides with the plane perpendicular to that containing the shafts and bisecting the angle between them, so that the driven shaft rotates uniformly. The torquetransmitting member is constituted by three pins 7 articulated at their mid-points on a common pivot 8 to form a six-armed spider, which engages six slots b, c lying on great circles of the spherical shells A<1>, B<1> respectively. The extremities of the arms may carry sliding thimbles and the parts in contact with the slots c may be provided with flat pieces to increase the contact surface. In a modification, the parts A<1>, B<1> are of equal diameter and comprise each three claws alternately disposed, the interposed ends of the spider arms being provided with conical or other rollers. The parts are preferably held together by a divided spherical sheath.
