Abstract

26,279. Taylor, W. H. Nov. 15. Non-collapsible umbrellas; covers; sticks. - Relates to parasols or the like made of stiff material such as paper or cardboard. The cover and brace are formed from flat disks upon which ornamental designs or advertisements may be printed, and which are adapted for easy shipment. Either or both the cover and brace are slit so that they may be drawn up to a conical shape. Fig. 3 shows a cover 1 and brace 2 radially slit and preferably secured together as by lugs 11 on the brace passing through slots 12 in the cover; they are forced simultaneously into the shape shown in Fig. 5, the overlapping edges of the material being secured together by paper-fasteners &c. The stick 3 is formed with a groove 4 and a stop such as a pin 5. A tongue may be provided on one edge of the slit in the brace or cover to project over the opposite edge and aid in the overlapping. Instead of radial slits as shown in Fig. 3, sectors may be cut out of the disks and the abutting edges secured by wire staples. The lugs 11 on the brace may be pasted to the cover. The cover may be permanently flat and the brace conical, or vice versa. In the latter case, the stick, instead of passing through an aperture in the cover, may abut against the underside of the cover at the apex, the lower stop on the stick being replaced by an ordinary umbrella spring catch abutting against the flat upper surface of the brace. Such a spring catch may also be employed with the parasol shown in Fig. 5 in place of the pin 5; but, in this case, a flat terminal head on the stick may replace the groove 4. Fig. 11 shows a modification in which the brace is in three separate portions secured to the cover 1 by lugs 11, so that, when the parts are drawn up into conical shape, the stick may be passed up through the three coinciding holes 16.
