Abstract

3046. Bowes, Scott, & Western, and Dalgleish, I. S. Feb. 5. Magnetic separators.-The separator comprises superposed poles carrying an intermittent, pulsating, or alternating flux, arranged so that the upper pole separates the material into two streams which then come under the influence of the lower pole, the magnetic particles descending between successive attractions to the poles. The separation may take place in air or water. In the form shown in Fig. 7, upper and lower poles d, c are detachahly fixed to the side of a tank s, the material to be treated is supplied by a shoot j, and the magnetic and non- magnetic materials are discharged through hoppers r, l, respectively. An adjustable guide plate k is arranged between the separated streams, and the outlet from one or both hoppers may be provided with a valve v controlled by a float x. The poles may be covered with non-magnetic material, which may, as shown at f, extend over the air gap between the poles, or the gap between the poles may be filled in with non-magnetic material. Baffle-plates 1, 3 may be provided to guide the material to the poles, and water is preferably supplied in such a manner that a stream flows past the separation point in opposition to the deflective tendency of the lower pole; for example water may be supplied to the hopper by a pipe y in excess of that discharging through the bottom of such hopper. The lines of force may be concentrated by suitably forming the poles, and laminated poles may be used if desired with air gaps or non-magnetic material between the laminations.
