Abstract

27,811. Clements, W. B. Dec. 11. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, arrangement and construction of; steering and balancing; cars. - At the rear of a flying- machine is arranged a collapsible keel plane b, for balancing and steering, comprising pivoted rods 49, 50 connected together and to a fixed rod 47 by a fabric covering. The plane is extended by a cord 56 and collapsed by a cord 52 connected to the rod 50 and passing around pulleys 54, 55. The aeroplane is provided with a rectangular supporting-plane a having curved extensions 5, 6 at each side. A car 12 having pointed ends is supported by stays 11 from the frame of the plane a and carries the motor for driving the propellers and the land-wheels for starting. An elevator 36 is supported on outriggers at the front end of the machine, and a pair of rudders 27, 28 are mounted on vertical frame rods 9, 9<1> and connected by a cord 29. Propelling.-Propellers 19, 20 are arranged at the front of the machine and drive a current of air under the main plane a. Aerial machines adapted to travel also on land.-The motor is arranged to drive a shaft gearing with the axle carrying the rear wheels, so that the machine is driven forward on starting.
