Abstract
9485. Planes, Ltd., and Thompson, W. P. April 19. [Cognate Application, 10,702/10.] [Addition to 25,315/08.] Aerial machines without aerostats; cars and c a b i n s; steering and balancing; framework. -Relates to improvements in the flying-machine described in the parent Specification, in which the car is flexibly suspended from the supporting-planes, and the adjustments of the planes for steering and balancing are effected by movement of the car. According to the present invention, both longitudinal and lateral movements of the car are effected by means of a single operating- lever, and the fore and aft steering - lines are connected to outriggers which may be folded against the main planes to facilitate transport. In the form shown in Fig. 1, one or two main planes A, A<1> are connected to a frame C, from which the car or platform 0 is suspended by means of ball-ended rods R. The movements of the car for steering and balancing are effected by a lever I which is mounted on a universal joint K and provided at its lower end with four arms L<4>, from which extend operating-lines, two of which extend longitudinally, and are attached respectively to the rear of the frame C and to a front outrigger D, as shown; the other two extend laterally, and are connected to points near the ends of the main planes. The lever I is provided with locking-racks in both directions, and when locked fore and aft, may be operated sideways by the aviator's knees. A rudder M or ailerons may be provided and connected to the lever I so as to produce the same steering effect as is produced by the adjustment of the main planes. The form shown in Fig. 2 is provided with both rear and front elevators mounted on outriggers D, X, the former of which may be forded alongside the main planes about a joint W, while the latter may be turned upwards against the main planes. The machine may be provided with means for furling the planes as described in Specification 20,575/09. Aerial machines adapted to travel also on land.-In order to facilitate transport on land when the machine is folded as described above, the wheels F<1> may be set in a position at rightangles to their normal position, either by placing them on axles R<1>, or by rotating the wheeled frames G about vertical axes arranged in line with the rods R. Tanks, arrangement of.-The main plane, for a part of its area, may be constructed to serve as a petrol-tank T, Fig. 1.
