Abstract

2116. Newton, P. A., [Hoe, R.]. Jan. 28. Feeding sheets; cylinder machines with plane printing-surfaces; delivery apparatus.-Relates to sheet feeding, taking, and delivering devices in connexion with the cylinders of two-revolution cylinder and other printing - machines. Fig. 1 shows a two-revolution machine in which the sheets are fed against a front stop consisting of a series of fingers 7 adjustably carried on a bracket 8 capable of rocking about a shaft 9 when operated by a cam 18 and a roller 22 adjustably mounted in an arm 20. The front stop is quickly raised for a short period only by giving the cam 18 an intermittent rotary movement. The face of the cam is provided with grooved arms 28 into which engage studs 29 on a driving-disk 30 secured on the machine frame by a link 35 connected to a crank 34 on the shaft of the cylinder 1. Ribs 39 on the disk enter between pairs of studs 38 on the arms 28 and prevent rotation of the cam at the proper intervals. The raising of the stop may be timed to occur when the cam is rotating most quickly. The sheet-taking grippers 13 are operated, as usual, by a tumbler block 15, and a pair of sliding pins 40 ; the pins, however, are operated by a lever 44, pivoted at 45 and rocked by a stud 47 engaging a cam-groove in the hub of the cam 18. The lever 44 may also operate a series of shoofly fingers 16. The sheet may be directed between delivery rollers 60, 61 by means of switches 55 operated by an arm 57 and a cam 59 on the hub of the cam 18. A sheet -propelling roller 62, governed by an arm 65 and a cam 67 on the arm 57, may also be provided.
