Sweeping-machines.-In road-sweeping machines, means is. provided to prevent dirt from clogging the bearings of the conveyer, and the pan to receive the sweepings from the brush is made flexible to avoid injury in consequence of the machine moving backwards. The fixed pan 1, Figs. 1 and 2, riveted by its side plates 2 to the frame, has at its rear edge a transverse rod 7 on which are hinged flexible plates 6, which can rise independently or may all be raised at once by fingers 8 on the rod, which is operated by a crank and rod 10. A number of plates 13, fitted on a transverse shaft, are armel with wire bristles 14 or folded flexible fabric 15, and alternately clean the brush 11 and the fixed pan 1. The latter extends forwards to the conveyer 5, the lower bearing-roller 20 of which is scraped by a metal plate 19, bent as shown in Fig. 6, and profiled to fit the roller. The plates 6 of the pan extension are preferably of rubber or other flexible material, which is folded round a sleeve 6<a>, Fig. 4, on the rod and secured by rivets or other means. With thick rubber, one ply is used. If thin rubber is employed, the doubled ends are attached by a row of rivets as shown in Fig. 6, and the forward ends may be stiffened by vulcanizing or by attaching a metal plate 6<b> below. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, flexible edgings 16 are riveted to the metal portions 6<c>, and the end plates are preferably fitted with flanges 18.
