Abstract

8203. Livesey, H. April 8. Motor road vehicles.-Consists of improvements in the construction of combined epicyclic and bevel-toothed speed-changing and reversing mechanism, the object being to arrange the toothed gearing in a compact manner and enclose it in a dustproof case. The motor shaft 1, Fig. 1, parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle drives the transverse shafts 3, 3, which are connected together by ordinary differential gearing 29, 30, 31, the chain-wheels 44 being carried by the shafts 3, 3. The shaft 1 revolves loosely in the sleeve 5, which is fitted at the outer end with one part 7 of a friction clutch, the other part 7 of the clutch being attached to the shaft 1. The inner end of the sleeve carries a flange 8, to which is attached the bevel-wheels 9, 10. The spur-wheels 22 shown also in Fig. 4, are mounted on pins 22 journalled in the flange 8 and the wheel 10, the wheel 22 gearing with the wheel 23 and with the internally-toothed ring 11 mounted on the wheel 10. The ring 11 is surrounded by a band 13, which can be tightened to hold the ring by means of the eccentric rods 15. The wheels 9, 10 gear with the wheels 32 running loosely on'the sleeve 26, but either of the wheels can be connected to a ring 34 fixed to the sleeve, by means of the projections 39, 39 engaging recesses 35,36 formed in the ring 34, engagement being effected by means of forked levers fitting grooves cut in the sleeves 37, 38. To the sleeve 26 is attached the gear case 28 carrying the wheel 29 of the differential gearing. The bevel-wheel 42 is fixed to the case, and can be slid into gear with the wheel 9 by means of the forked lever 41, so that a reverse movement of the shafts 3, 3 can be obtained to that when the case is driven through the medium of either of the wheels 32. By disconnecting the clutch 7, 7 and the band brake 13, the shaft 1 revolves idly, but by holding the ring 11, the bovel wheels 9, 10 are slowly revolved through the medium of the wheels 23, 22, the sleeve 26 being driven through either of the wheels 32. By disconnecting the band brake 13 and connecting the friction brake 7, 7, a faster speed is obtained. A slightly modified form of gear, working on the same principle, but differing in some details, is also described in the Specification.
