Abstract
3727. Homeister, J. H. Feb. 11. Magnetic toys.-A ball, wheel, roller, or the like is caused to rotate, and, in most cases, also to travel along the ground &c., while a figure remains on or near its highest point. The ball h is provided with a divided shaft d<1>, d<2> fixed thereto by supports k<1>, k<2>. Freely suspended from the shaft is a frame c carrying (1) a loose vertical shaft b upon which a magnet a is fixed, (2) a weight e which is eccentrically supported, and (3) a motor spring case f, which can be wound up by a key inserted through an opening h<1>, and which is prevented from unwinding by a ratchet-wheel f<3> and pawl f<4>. A friction disc or toothed wheel f<2> on the spring barrel drives a friction disc or pinion i on the shaft d<2>, and therefore causes the ball to roll and the portion d<1> of the shaft also to rotate From the latter, motion is communicated by the friction or toothed wheels l, g<2>, shaft g<1>, wormwheel g, and worm b<1> to the shaft b and magnet a. This induces magnetism in the armature a' above, upon which is fixed or simply rested any desired appliance, such as a velocipede and rider, a swing- ing arm S, a figure L on a ball, a disc, a balloon, or a top. By disconnecting the shaft from the ball, the latter simply rotate! without travelling.
