Abstract

186,038. Richards, H., Cassels, A. V., Townsend, O. A., and Paton, J. A. Sept. 18, 1921, [Convention date]. Motor-vehicle and the like head lamps; electric lamp lanterns; mounting electric lamps in lanterns.-To prevent dazzle in vehicle head-lights &c., a coloured transparent envelope, divided or striated into stripes of the primary colours, is revolved around or partly around and in front of a source of light mounted in front of a reflector in a lamp casing or the wall of the lamp bulb is coloured and the bulb itself rotated. In the latter form the bulb, Fig. 2, is divided longitudinally into four parts, two parts 7 being coloured blue tinged with green, the other parts 8 yellow, and is rotated by an electric motor mounted in a casing 9 which is supported by a collar 38 on the rear of the head-light and retained therein by screws through lugs 40. The bulb-holder is mounted in a socket 26 integral with a hollow shaft 23 which is mounted on a stationary axle 27 and has secured thereon a sleeve 20 carrying the core 18 of the armature proper 17 and a commutator 21 and a contact ring 22. Two sets of spring brushes 33 axe mounted in the casing 9, one set for the commutator 21 and one for the ring 22. One supply wire is earthed to the casing 9 and the other is connected to an adaptor 36 and then through a contact spring 34 to the brushes 33 which are connected in parallel. One lead of the field-windings 14 of the armature is connected to the contact 34 or one of the brushes 33 and the other is earthed; similarly one lead of each of the armature windings 19 is connected to its corresponding commutator segment and the other is earthed to the armature core 18. A lead for the bulb is led from the ring 22 through the core 18 or under the windings 19. In a modification, an envelope coloured similarly to the bulb 7, 8 is rotated around the bulb, which is fixed, and only one set of brushes 33 is used.
