Abstract

185,214. British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., and Gouldbourn, J. May 31,1921. Splitting, &c.-In apparatus for splitting and skiving leather and the like of the type in which the leather &c. is fed to a fixed plane knife by feed-rolls, as described in Specifications 21977/03, [Class 76, Leather], and 18752/12 for example, and in which a draw cut is obtained by movement of the feed-mechanism across the line of feed as the feed progresses, as described in Specification 2465/72, [Class 76, Leather], the feed-rolls are given a comparatively rapid transverse vibratory movement by reciprocating means external to their bearings. In the form shown, the machine is of the type described in Specification 21977/03, [Class 76, Leather], and comprises feed-rolls 2, 4 geared to a power driven shaft 10 and rotating in bearings 7, 9 of which the latter is formed, as usual, in spring-pressed levers 11 which allow movement of the lower roll towards and away from a fixed knife (not shown). A belt-driven pulley 12 loose' on the shaft 10 carries a member 13 formed with a cam-track 14 engaged by a roller 18 on a lever 20 pivoted at 22 to lugs 23 on the machine frame. A second roller on a member rigidly connected to the frame causes reciprocation of the pulley 12 and member 13 as they revolve so that the roller 18 receives a throw of double the normal throw of the cam-track. The lever 20 is formed at'its other end with a projecting sleeve 26 which houses a pin 24 bifurcated at its upper end to engage a groove in the shaft of the upper roll 2. The sleeve 26 also forms a bearing for a barrel-shaped roll 28 running in a correspondingly shaped track in a disc 30 fixed to the shaft 5 of the lower roll. Oscillation of the lever 20 thus causes both feed-rolls to reciprocate in unison in their bearings. The cam-track 13 is so designed as to give quick reversal of movement of the feed-rolls from one direction to the other and the throw of the cam-track and the speed at which it is driven are so related that the average axial rate of movement of the feed-rolls is at least as great as their peripheral speed. The Provisional Specification refers to a construction in which the oscillating lever is coupled to one only of the feed-rolls which are coupled for joint movement by a rib and groove.
