Abstract

183,430. Trent Process Corporation, (Assignees of Trent, lV. E.). July 20, 1921, [Convention date]. Flotation processes and apparatus.-A process of treating finely-divided coal or other carbonaceous material consists in placing the material in water or other liquid suspension, applying an agglomerating-agent such as hydrocarbon oil, and agitating the mixture to cause the oil to unite with the coal particles to form substantially uniform spherical masses free from gangue and largely freed of the liquid and of such sizes as to be capable of being carried by the moving liquid. The finely pulverized coal is fed with water intermittently or continuously through an inlet 2 of the receptacle 1, which is divided by the partitions 5 - - 8 into compartments 4, 9, 10, 11, 12, the inlets and outlets 16 - - 19 of which are so placed and of such a size as to regulate the time required for the material to pass through each compartment. Oil is introduced by the pipe 3 and is agitated with the coal and water by means of the blades 15 on a rotary shaft 13. The agglomerated masses are carried by the water through the discharge trough 20, and deposited on an endless travelling screen 21, where they become subjected to the clearing action of jets of water from the pipe 26 and from which they are discharged into the receptacle 23. The water, with the suspended impurities and any excess oil, flows through the screen 21 into the trough 24, being conveyed by a pipe 24<1> to a settling-receptacle 25. Specification 151,236 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a.) refers also to Specification 146,981 but this reference does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
