Abstract

166,578. Moore, H. R. Rivers-. Jan 10, 1919. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Leader gear and other arrangements for assisting navigation.-In apparatus for localizing a submerged cable carrying an alternating current for use by ships for navigational purposes, and in which the electromotive force induced by the cable in a coil or coils disposed on the ship is observed, a single horizontal coil may be used which may or may not be combined with a vertical coil, or two coils may be arranged vertically each at 45‹ to the centre line of the ship. A single horizontal coil may be connected up through an amplifier to a telephone receiver, a zero point being observed corresponding to the crossing of the cable. Suitable dimensions for the coil are given, and it may be formed by a cable run round the deck or bv wires slung in the rigging. The horizontal coil D, Fig. 3, may be combined with a vertical coil G, the two being connected in series through an amplifier E and receiver F, thus providing means for determining the approximate direction of the magnetic field at any point. The inter-connection of the coils D, G mav be made reversible bv a switch H which has also a position H<1> in which the horizontal coil alone is used. Two vertical coils may be arranged each at an angle of 45‹ with the centre line of the vessel, being conveniently rigged from a mast and arranged in triangular form with the apex uppermost. A change-over switch is provided for connection each in turn to the receiver to enable the induced electromotive force in each to be observed. To determine the approximate angle of the cable, the coils G', G<2>, Fig. 5, may be connected to a second pair of coils K, K<1>, within which rotates a coil L connected to the amplifying and receiving apparatus and causing relative displacement between an index and scale. Bare wire loops may be employed as In wireless aerials, and means may be provided for giving a visible indication when a submarine cable is crossed.
