Abstract

160,486. Berry, A. F. Oct. 22, 1919. Electric radiators.- In high-power radiators of the electric lamp type worked at high incandescence and provided with reflectors, the upper or rear part of the bulb is provided with a matt, dead, frosted, or roughened surface to absorb and radiate heat, the lower or front part being left clear. The surface may be produced by a sand-blast or may consist of a layer of lamp-black. In the lamp shown in section in Fig. 1, the inner surface of the bulb at a is reflecting, and the outer surface at b' rough. In a modification, the outer surface of the glass is provided with a reflecting coating having a heat-dissipating backing. In the lamp shown in Fig. 2, a zig-zag tungsten or other filament d, which may have a matt surface, is mounted on a prismatic glass or silica rod e having a roughened back surface e<1>. The lamp contains curved reflectors having rough back surfaces a<2>, and the part of the bulb behind the reflectors is roughened inside and outside as shown. As shown in Fig. 3, the rod e is mounted in end supports g having reflecting inner faces hand rough outer surfaces h<1>. The parts of the bulb behind the supports g are provided with heatdissipating surfaces inside and outside. The caps i may be cooled by ribs j or by a fluid. A number of such radiators may be mounted in a carrier k vertically adjustable on a stand m having a reflecting surface m<1>. An adjustable hood n is pivoted on the carrier k, an air-passage o being left between the hood and carrier. Specifications 122,207 and 122,210, [both in Class 39 (ii), Electric lamps, Incandescent], are referred to.
