Description

(54) MAGGOT BREEDING (71) I, DONALD GRANT, a British subject of 159 Stamford Road, Audenshaw, Manchester, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a method of breeding maggots and to a maggot breeding bag when used to perform the method.
Maggots of the kind used by anglers as bait are expensive. For keen anglers with limited resources there is good reason to breed maggots for themselves. The present invention has been made from a consideration of that requirement.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of breeding maggots comprising introducing a nutrient medium into a bag via a closable opening thereof, allowing flies to lay eggs on the nutrient medium, closing the said opening, allowing gases generated in the bag during breeding to escape via a first outlet and, removing maggots from the bag via a second outlet.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a maggot breeding bag suitable for use in carrying out the invention, in elevation.
Referring to the drawing a maggot breeding bag suitable for use in carrying out the present invention comprises an envelope 10 preferably of flexible plastics material. It is also preferred that the envelope is transparent. This envelope is open along its top edge 12 and tapers at the bottom thereof where an outlet tube 14 of flexible plastics is fitted. A gas release tube 16 of flexible plastics is connected to the envelope in the upper portion thereof. At each side of the envelope and adjacent the top thereof two strengthened areas 18 are provided, there being an aperture 20 through each area.
In use in accordance with the method of the invention, nutrient medium for maggots such as decomposing vegetable matter is placed in the bag through the top opening thereof. When the nutrient medium has been contaminated, for example naturally by allowing flies to enter therein, the top of the envelope is closed by folding it along fold line shown as dotted line 22 in the drawing. The folding as aforesaid can be secured as by removable clamps or pegs. When the top is folded the apertures 20 on each side of the envelope come into register and the bag may be hung up by inserting a hook or the like through said apertures.
Gases produced within the bag when in use are released through tube 16. If the bag is in a building such as a garden shed, garage or greenhouse, the tube 16 can be led outside the building. Maggots are conveniently removed from the bag through tube 14.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A method of breeding maggots comprising introducing a nutrient medium into a bag via a closable opening thereof, allowing flies to lay eggs on the nutrient medium closing the said opening, allowing gases generated in the bag during breeding to escape via a first outlet, and, removing maggots from the bag via a second outlet.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the nutrient medium is first introduced into the bag and the opening is left open for a time, only being closed after flies have been allowed to lay eggs on the medium whilst it is in the bag.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1, or 2, wherein the opening is closed sufficiently to seal the bag against escape of maggots therefrom and against the escape of gases therefrom.
4. A method of breeding maggots substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
5. A maggot breeding bag, when used to perform the method of any preceding claim, comprising an envelope having a closable opening for admitting thereto nutrient medium for maggots, a first outlet for release of gases from the bag, and a second outlet for delivery of maggots from the bag.
6. A maggot breeding bag as claimed in
