Description

(54) PORTABLE HAND-HELD MEASURING DEVICE (71) We, SANKO SEWING MACHINE COMPANY LIMITED, a Japanese Company of No. 96, Mizubashiri, Higashiosaka-shi, Osakafu, Japan, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to a portable handheld measuring device.
One kind of conventional pocket measure is furnished with a belt made of metal, cloth or resin on which scales are marked, or carved, and the belt is directly attached to a material of which the length is to be measured. In such a device, the belt is accurately laid against the material to be measured without loosening it, and a numerical value at a measuring point of the material is read out. Even slight slipping could not be permitted for exact measurement.
Further the scales on the belt become unclear after use because of rubbing as the belt is coiled, or for other reasons.
The invention has been devised to provide an improved portable hand-held measuring device.
According to the invention there is provided a portable hand-held measuring-device having a measuring roller rotatably mounted for rolling contact along a length of material for measurement thereof, digital means for providing a digital electrical output in accordance with rotation of the roller corresponding to the length of the contacted material, and means for giving a digital indication of the digital electrical output.
Preferably the measuring roller is adapted to be rolled in forward and reverse directions along the material to be measured and the digital means comprising issuing pulses in synchronism with the rotation of the contacting roller, and a reversible counter connected to count the pulses additively or subtractively in accordance with whether the roller is moving forwards, or in reverse, the output of the reversible counter being displayed on a digital indicator.
Preferably the output of the reversible counter is connected to a calculator which performs a predetermined mathematical operation on the digital output and applies the result to the digital indicator.
The invention will further be described with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 is a diagram of a portable handheld measuring device according to the invention, and Figure 2 is a block circuit diagram of the device of Figure 1.
Figure 1 shows a measuring body 1 which is provided with the measuring roller 2 to be run on a material 3 to be measured.
Figure 2 shows that the device comprises a pulse generator 4 which is arranged within the measuring body 1. The pulse generator issues pulses in response to rotation of the measuring roller 2. A reversible counter 5 responds to the pulses and a digital indicator 6 receives the output from the reversible counter 5.
The pulse generator 4 issues pulses in proportion to the distance the measuring roller 2 moves. The moving speed of the roller is immaterial. Pulses are applied to be added in the reversible counter 5 when the roller moves forwards and to be subtracted when the roller moves backwards. The reversible counter 5 exactly carries out addition or subtraction of pulses from the pulse generator 4. The digital indicator 6 is operated by means of the signal from the reversible counter 5.
There is a certain relationship between the number of pulses from the pulse generator 4 and the length of the material 3 being measured, whereby the digital indication shows instantly the length of the material 3.
In Figure 2, there is shown a portable calculator 7 having a key 8 and a calculating circuit 9. In this device the portable calculator 7 is built within the measuring body 1. The calculator performs a multiplication or division on the output from the counter, so scaling the output for accurate display on depression of key 8. With the arrangement described above it is sufficient only to rotate the measuring roller on the part to be measured of the material, and the measuring result is shown by the digital indicator. There is virtually no danger of misreading. In addition this roller may also serve for marking cutting lines, and in such a case the electric circuit is switched off. Further, the portable calculator is included in the measuring device, to increase its usefulness.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A portable hand-held measuring device having a measuring roller rotatably mounted for rolling contact along a length of material for measurement thereof, digital means for providing a digital electrical output in accordance with the rotation of the roller corresponding to the length of the contacted material, and means for giving a digital indication of the digital electrical output.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the measuring roller is adapted to be rolled in fonvard and reverse directions along the material to be measured and the digital means comprising issuing pulses in synchronism with the rotation of the contacting roller, and a reversible counter connected to count the pulses additively or subtractively in accordance with whether the roller is moving forwards, or in reverse, the output of the reversible counter being displayed on a digital indicator.
3. A device as claimed in claim 2 wherein the output of the reversible counter is connected to a calculator which performs a predetermined mathematical operation on the digital output and applies the result to the digital indicator.
4. A device as claimed in claim 3, wherein the digital output from the counter is applied to the calculator through a key.
5. A portable hand-held measuring device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.

1. A portable hand-held measuring device having a measuring roller rotatably mounted for rolling contact along a length of material for measurement thereof, digital means for providing a digital electrical output in accordance with the rotation of the roller corresponding to the length of the contacted material, and means for giving a digital indication of the digital electrical output.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the measuring roller is adapted to be rolled in fonvard and reverse directions along the material to be measured and the digital means comprising issuing pulses in synchronism with the rotation of the contacting roller, and a reversible counter connected to count the pulses additively or subtractively in accordance with whether the roller is moving forwards, or in reverse, the output of the reversible counter being displayed on a digital indicator.
3. A device as claimed in claim 2 wherein the output of the reversible counter is connected to a calculator which performs a predetermined mathematical operation on the digital output and applies the result to the digital indicator.
4. A device as claimed in claim 3, wherein the digital output from the counter is applied to the calculator through a key.
5. A portable hand-held measuring device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
