Abstract

1534859 Detector for magnetizable material DE LA RUE CROSFIELD Ltd 4 June 1976 [19 Sept 1975] 11421/75 Heading G4M Articles carrying a magnetizable material having a magnetic coercivity above or below a predetermined value are identified by determining whether the coercivity is above or below the value. The magnetizable material is subjected<SP>8</SP> to a first magnetizing field sufficient to saturate the material having the higher coercivity and is then subjected<SP>9</SP> to a second field of opposite polarity with a sufficient strength to reverse the polarity of the material having the lower coercivity but insufficient strength to reverse the polarity of the material having the higher coercivity. The polarity of the magnetized material is then detected<SP>11</SP> and used to operate a deflector 19 to sort the articles. The number of articles having each polarity may be counted A, B. The recorded signal is read by head 11, shaped and amplified by amplifier 13 and fed to adjustable upper 14 and lower 16 limit detectors. The detectors feed respective gates 15 and monostables cross coupled to the gates. The documents are driven at a constant speed by rollers 7 and electric motor M.
