Abstract

The devices at the transmitting and receiving end are in each case controlled by a clock generator, these clock generators being synchronised at the start of each transmission with the aid of alignment signals. A first alignment signal (KW1) initiates the transmission of cipher signals (SKZ) from the transmitter to the receiver by means of which a cipher generator at the receiving end is programmed. The transmitter transmits a second alignment signal (KW2) in encrypted form (KW2 VS) to the receiver which, following correct decryption of the second alignment signal, transmits a third alignment signal (KW3) as an acknowledgement to the transmitter which then, with a fourth alignment signal (KW4), initiates the transmission of the encrypted message to the receiver. Incorrectly received second, third or fourth alignment signals effect the resetting of the cipher devices by means of circuits (E1, E2) to a basic setting (GSt) and a repetition of the described method steps. <IMAGE>
