Abstract
1528418 Determining monomer in polymethylmethacrylate COMBINED OPTICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 May 1977 [11 June 1976] 24371/76 Heading G1A Monomer (MMA) in an article of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is determined by irradiating the article with mono chromatic light of a wavelength which gives rise to, in the Raman spectrum, a pair of lines, one corresponding to MMA alone and one corresponding to MMA + PMMA, determining the intensity of this pair of lines and determining the monomer content from the ratio thereof. Preferably the source is a laser tuned to one of 647À1, 514À5 or 488À0nm and the lines detected are 1640Œ10cm<SP>-1</SP> (MMA) and 1730Œ10cm<SP>-1</SP> (MMA + PMMA). The articles measured may be lens implants and the measuring circuitry may determine the monomer content and indicate either that or whether the MMA content is below a predetermined value.
